Although this for Amex USA, it’s alarming to think they could easily adopt a similar approach here if implemented, that would certainly be the final nail in the coffin supporting an April account cancellation for me.
Might be an unpopular opinion but I am ok with this. It's just Amex enforcing their T&Cs imho. I know that psychologically, seeing a credit to an account followed by a debit in the event of T&C violation is more jarring than not getting a published cashback, but it is effectively the same.
Amex detected a T&C violation and reversed the excess credit. This was quite a few months ago now and no sign that they are going back any further historically to enforce this.
I would not feel intrinsically different about this treatment than I would if I purchased something with the promise of bonus points and then did not receive them due to not following the T&Cs to the letter, personally.
