New Amex statement credits

Bought 3 Harris Farm Gift cards today, received immediate notification from amex.

I see people have these for sale on Ebay at the moment.

Seems they also did it for the past Harvey Norman offer.

Have to think that AMEX will definitely exclude gift cards if this keeps getting abused.

Not abused at all. I used one and a half immediately. Bought card on way in as I did not want to muck around at a busy checkout on way out.

I did not think Hardly Normal did cards, care to enlighten me so I can nip down there tomorrow???

Bowral store had gift cards. I bought 5 x $50 gift cards. No problems. Also managed to make 5 X $50 purchases. No problems spending that amount. Items were expensive but many thing were impossible to find elsewhere.

Does anyone know if the Harris farm offers come up often?

Ive check at least 15 different BP stores. Only one stocked $50 cards and the attendant had no idea how to encode them!

No problem with BP gcs being stocked in Kingsford

Which Kingsford? There are Kingsford's in multiple states.

I assume from your location you mean NSW, but I'd like to confirm as I don't want to waste a special trip there.

The Harvey Norman I went to had other gift cards too besides the egift cards however posted on Ozbargain and then all gone !

This was Melbourne QV store

Yes, Kingsford 2032, located at the corner of Barker St & Anzac Parade. I'd try and ring the place before hand to verify.

Since I mentioned it (must just be a coincidence of course) all the $50 cards have gone and there are now $100 and $25s there as of this morning.

Triggered the 7th redemption at 119.9c as one car was down to approx 6 litres. Only 5 to go!

BTW - the nice 30 something lady happily will split a transaction across two cards.

While I was waiting I was amazed at how many uni students came in and split payments (for food/coffees etc) over two cards. Amounts under $10.

Noticed in BP Balgowlah today that they sell other giftcards (DJ Myer iTunes Spotify etc)-potential option if the BP ones dry up

How is the Balgowlah outlet for price? I find N.Manly a bit pricey. What about Manly?

Variable I find. Better than Shell but Caltex often wins. Dont tend to use 7/11 or indies (because of points addiction mainly)

So I caught with a friend who owns a few shops all over Sydney and I had received Amex statement offers for his business.... now expired. When I asked him about his statement offer he was not aware that his business was in the list. He said it must be an Amex initiative and he had nothing to do with it nor did he know about it. The offer though was online only so I am at a loss to explain how Amex decides on which businesses to add and physical stores vs online only or both. Interesting....

On the other hand, Harris Farm are actively promoting their Amex offer both in store and online.

the less nice gentleman behind the counter either didn't know or wasn't willing to split so I ended up just making a couple of transactions just over $40 still a good deal. Guess it's the luck of the draw on staff.
Shame only registered 2 cards but $60 is good & my opal cards are topped up as is my tank :)

After visiting a total of 22 different BP stations I finally have my gift cards (all 30 of them!).

Some observations about the experience:

1) Many BP stores simply don't stock BP gift cards and there seems no correspondence between those listed online as stocking them and those stores actually stocking the cards.

2) When I did find cards there were often problems with operators knowing how to encode them. BP needs to provide proper training for employees and/or simplify their gift card system. In about 80% of the situations where I did find the cards I wasn't able to purchase them because the operator did not know how to encode the card or claimed that the system to encode the card was inactive.

3) There appears no way to check the balance of the gift card online. Given the difficulty in having the cards I obtained encoded I'm doubtful that this may have been done correctly. So I'm definitely keeping all receipts.

For those still looking for gift cards, I can recommend BP Connect Runway near Sydney Airport (Cnr Butler Road & General Homes Drive, Mascot.) They have a very large number of cards in stock and the operator is on the ball.

Very informative piece of research, Dr Ralph. The only thing I would add is that not all BPs are actually BPs. For example my local BP is in Northwood but is actually a 'Jack & Co'. You still receive the credit for spending $40 on petrol there but they don't sell gift cards - apparently only 'real' BPs sell BP gift cards.

Apologies to those not in Sydney for the very Sydney-centric post.
