New iOS and Android Apps - Bug Reports and Suggestions

To be fair, app access is but one small part of a paid subscription to AFF, which can include ad-free browsing, special deals like discounted qantas club membership for non-status passengers and the general good feeling you get from supporting a site that helps support you with great tips.

Sam, you are a great contributor and I respect your view. Different users will place value on different aspects of the paid membership. For me, it's the app (with a bit of "good feeling" you mentioned to pay back for the helpful community AFF has created).

A limited app means limited involvement for me. At renewal time this means weighing the value of the limited opportunity to read and contribute in the way I prefer.

Ps. The app crashed when I first tried to reply!

I am confident the changes coming soon will enable you to increase your involvement. This anniversary year should be good!

I'm not raining on the arguments of those grousing about the shortcomings of the app(s).

I'm just reflecting and wondering how on earth this community was "so good" at the time when no app existed at all.

It was and is a good community. Just for my personal usage habits, using an app is far easier then via website. It's easy to read, standard format and the pictures usually work.

300 baud modems and FidoNet once made a good community....:)

It has been a while since I looked at the Unread option, I normally just use the Timeline. It's a strange thing, it sometimes shows posts that are Unread since the last visit, and sometimes it shows the lot going further back. Curious.

Hi, I would like to suggest the app (with the ability to post) be made available to free users. This will boost hits/participation etc. You should put adds on the app for free users, no adds for paid users. I use a reddit app like this and I spend plenty of time on reddit that I wouldn't otherwise spend on their site because of the app. I strongly feel this is win/win for everyone involved. Thanks

Any reason to not become a financial member so you can use the app? As you would have already noted in this thread, the app works mostly well, but it needs development $$$ to keep it working.

Because I don't want to.

It's a forum, I contribute, I don't use adblock. I think it's reasonable for this forum to have various revenue streams.

My feedback is for the site owners/administrators and I think all the people laying cough on me for not wanting to be a paying member should get off their high horse.

Noted your other post of switching to XenForo as well as I think a comment that the app access would be removed, at least temporarily.

Is there a timeframe for it coming back?

Although I do agree looking at the XenForo support forums that it renders well.

The history behind XenForo and vBulletin (which I didn't realise was owned by Internet Brands which owns FlyerTalk) is certainly interesting.

The primary focus will be a stable and completely operational start on Xenforo. When this has been taken care of, things like a native app (and I must say, the options for this are vastly superior) will be in the pipeline, but I cannot give a time frame at this time sorry. In the mean time, the performance of the site on mobile I find to be superior to the current app, thanks to the responsive design. Indeed, it works great and renders differently in both portrait and landscape.

What I can say though is that the process has been ongoing for quite some time with many changes and iterations. The decision was not taken lightly and everything was considered, leading to the re-launch on Saturday. As noted by the earlier post announcing the anniversary of the site, there is a plan to introduce a number of changes and features throughout the celebration year.

I hope you (the community) will be constructive at the time regarding the changes and any issues that may arise.

I hope the app doesn't take long. It's my major way of posting and I'm rarely on the PC these days. And the old app posted photos beautifully. Which are on my phone.

The interface for smart phones/small devices is reasonable.

Has the loading of photos direct from the phone been tested?

Yes, it was one of the first things we wanted to test when getting hold of the software, and it handles uploads nicely. What's more, the forum software then displays photos in a nice way when you click on them, allowing for easy navigation.
