New Next Gen Card and Bag Tags have arrived!

And there have been a reasonable number of people on this site who have told of instances where the NGCI tags have been either ripped off completely or damaged in such a way that the data was unreadable.

A reasonable number? I can recall 1 or maybe 2 reports of missing tags in the thread on NG tags survivability. Hardly a reasonable number.

There are a few reasons Nick.

First and most important is that I am flying a full-service carrier and they want me to check-in my own bag? Please! If I was flying Tiger or GOD forbud Jetstar then that would be a different story.

Secondly what will using NGCI check-in offer me? Better seat? Faster luggage turnaround at the other end? Quicker check-in experience? I can either line up at the Business/Platinum counter or find a free check-in kiosk and then the baggage deposit. Much of a much muchness.

Thirdly the first two reasons are important enough for me....

Once again you don't have to use NGCI to use the NG bags tags. Very important distinction! You can use the tags AND check in at the platinum desk! So, no you do not have to check in your own bag, which deals with reason 1. Using the NG tags does not mean you have to use NGCI, I mentioned this. Basically, 2 non reasons for not using the new bag tags on checked luggage.

Actually, I have wondered what would happen to my bags if the new luggage tags were nroken off in transit...:?:

Probably the same as what happens if the paper tags come off - you lodge a missing bag report and they have to locate it based on the description of the bag.

If you are going to check luggage is there an advantage to using the new bag tags that I have missed?

I don't want to use the bag tags just because I was told to use the bag tags.

No need to continually rip off the old ones?

Agreed. I don't want to use them because I was told. Advantages, slightly quicker at check in. Don't have to watch that they put on the priority tag. The computer routes the bag in the bowels of the baggage system not people, potential for consistent outcome.

On my one use the bags were out quickly, in ADL, as was our paper tagged bag.

Both the bag tag and the verification sticker would need to come off; either on their own is probably more unlikely than the NGCI tag being severed.

Oh totally agree, my comment was just to highlight that the process to track a bag without a tag probably wouldn't change because of NGCI.

I agree that there will be more cases of bags going missing now without tags (obviously it's easier for 1 tag to go missing rather than 2) but to locate it the process would be the same.

Are the tags locked to a particular person?

If me and my partner both have a tag, can I use his tag?

Plus I welcome the use of reusable tags as it's better for the environment.

I have a Q-tag on my bag and the last two flights I've flown Perth-Kalgoorlie my bag has not arrived on the flight. First time ten other passengers' bags didn't arrive and the latest only my bag didn't arrive (person travelling with me without Q-tag had no problem even though bags were loaded at the same time).

The Qantas assistant told me they are having a lot of problems with Q-tags and lost bags have become much more common - she suggested I remove the Q-tag until they sort the problems out.

I used my Q tags for the second time yesterday (usually am carry on only) flying ADL - SYD and one of my bags didn't arrive with me.

That's interesting (and terribly annoying!)... sounds like the Kal Qantas assistant might possibly be right. The other thing she said to me was to write my details on the Q-tag itself ie name and address - as sometimes the Q-tags weren't recording all the information.

I find the best piece of information, other than name, is your QFF number, as they can use that to find your address if they have access, but if they don’t then perhaps you don’t want them knowing your address ;)

Thanks...good advice.

UPDATE UPDATE UPDATE

Just got off the phone with QF, having finally tired of not receiving my NGCI kit.

The latest is that the rollout of kits to eligible members will take until the end of July.

(Given that we were told it would be finished by the end of February, that's only five months later than planned!)

The customer service person was quite apologetic, noting that it has taken much, much longer than they originally anticipated, and asked if I was in a particular rush for mine and needed it expedited. I said no, that I would just continue travelling with my old card - as I have been doing all year so far - until such time as the kit arrived.

Anyway, just thought people would like to know that the end of July is the new anticipated finish line .....

They were probably waiting until the Rapture to see if they could save money on sending some out...

So every time I called them to ask and they said 4 to 5 weeks was just to keep me quiet. Still strange that it is taking so long especially since they are selling them online...

To be fair, this is probably the same line that was being fed to the call centre staff. My guess is that either something has happened to delay production or someone higher up the chain was giving enthusiastic time estimates. Maybe both.

Frustrating nonetheless, I agree.
