For me 5B/J any time.

No cost to select exit seats in Business.

Thanks Serfty

how is the noise compared to upper deck?

it is flight back from DFW to SYD ex BNE so want to get lots of sleep

Hi Kefci2000,
5B/J are great seats for traveling solo. It's a bit more busy downstairs and I think there is generally more noise. Even when traveling alone I still choose 14K, next is 14A then the row 5 seats. The front 3 rows are also nice. Generally quieter upstairs though in answer to your question. Each to their own I guess.

Noise is as noise does.

There's 14 seats in Zone A (nose), 18 in Zone F (upstairs, row 14) and 26 in Zone B (row 5). For me the solo space with the personal storage locker would override an possible perception that Zone B might be noisier/busier than the other areas.

For my flight on Tuesday, upstairs is totally full and downstairs is nearly empty. So far I am the only person in row 5.

I was in 12j and noticed floor noise as people walked past, more so than in the other 747's with mk1 seats. It was almost like folk were walking on wooden floor. Not a problem. As has been said previously many times, any j seat is great compared to y.

I have got 5DEF for my family trip SYD-DFW-SYD - 3 J seats together is good when you have a 4 year old. Hoping for some good Aussie hospitality on the flight!

If this row is classed as an exit row you will not be allowed to sit there with a four year old.

It's not, the family in my picture had a child in the middle seat
Interesting - when doing the QF.com seat selection row 5 shows an exit row with seats 5B/D/E/F/J as exit seats.

And yet the seat map shows all of row 5 as being an exit row for all seats.

Would hate for the people concerned to be moved to less desirable seats.

The child in that row ( although not seen in my pic) was under 10. Maybe the rules have changed since it was taken ( DFW-BNE June 2012)

I suspect the rules are more rigidly enforced where there is a self-help emergency exit (e.g. the overwing exits on a 737), versus the exits that the crew operate.

the *note* also ONLY mentions that 'seating in exit is not available to customers with disabilities'... maybe the 'age' restrictions have been lifted for exit seating (as long as they occupy their own seat..ie.cannot be on lap for takeoff/landing) ... i would seek clarification from QF before travelling to save any 'checkin surprises''!!

My last trip on Qantas was LHR-BKK-SYD in J. We had seats 5DEF on the 744. Qantas did not have any issues with a 3 year old in these seats.

Having flown in 5B today I asked the FA the question about 5DEF. As noted by oz_mark, these seats aren't actually classed as exit row seas because the exit door is operated by the crew.

It was a great seat and I am in it when I return in May.

Apparently having your leg in a cast doesn't preclude one from sitting in exit row 14 upstairs either.

How do you think 5B compare to upstair exit row 14?? I would have thought upstairs more intimate (esp for sleep)?

VH-OJT positioned to Avalon this morning.

Last 744 for refurbishment.

I have a forward booking for QF108 in December in Y. EF shows new config, but in my QF bookings seat map currently shows the old arrangement:

14 First; 52 Business; 32 Premium Economy; 255 Economy*

I'm assuming it will actually be new 3 class seeing as all should by now be refurbed, but any suggestions why that flight still showing as old layout? I currently have a seat (41H) that doesn't exist on new config...
