New Qantas Toolbar - Earn Bonus Points just for searching

I have a mac - I found this on Qantas independently then had a look to see if there was a thread on it (seems im a day late) - I downloaded fire fox and its working fine for me but it it taking a lot of power from my computer so I am not sure how long I will run firefox on it.
I am happy for qantas to collect my search data because I assume it means they are going to target me for offers that will more specifically relate to me and I will be able to use. I am sure some see it differently but I receive marketing offers from them anyway, it may as well be relevant and for anything I don't want them knowing/marketing I just come back to my safari browser.

Searched for info on refunds for QF sale fares (because I actually need the info), and its "not a valid search". Weird.

I installed it on Firefox as it was the only one that works on macs. Useless. Either way, never use Yahoo to search anymore, their results are so off. And I don't use Firefox, so as long as I get my bonus points it doesn't matter ;)

I've earned some points searching for something called "australian frequent flyer" ;)

Someone is a little upset that they cancelled ADL-SIN flights?
I thought you might be happy to take a detour through SYD/MEL and ear some more FF points or SCs?

its just a short term problem while some of us get up to speed with krisFlyer and wonder what to do with our QFF points... ;)

So far here are a summary of my searches using the toolbar in IE, which is not my default browser

Your search was deemed invalid and did not qualify for earning a reward

This could have been for the following reasons:

  • You are in a country that is not eligible to earn rewards
  • Your search query was nonsensical or yielded no actual results
  • Your query originated from an automated process or macro
  • Your search patterns reflect that you are not actually using this service for results

IMPORTANT NOTE
We use sophisticated algorithms to determine valid searches in accordance with Yahoo! If you are not credited for your searches it means they have been flagged as invalid. Please understand that the current status is not permanent. You will receive credit for your searches if you continue to search naturally throughout your day.

Looks like they thought ahead so there won't be a pudding guy or the guy who did the macro for the 1 cent transactions with NAB... :)

After I broke it, waited an hour.... it works again...

Don't think you have to wait.

Search for "1 2 3" gives the invalid search message, immediately change to "1 + 2 + 3" and it works OK.

I am fine for cookies and various marketing strategies to give me things I am interested in, but it is annoying when a holiday destination we visited 6mnths ago keeps showing up in on-page ads. Keep it current please!!

will be some really interesting data they are collecting from some of us... how many people will just be typing random words for a point at a time...?

Just earned around 1,000 points all up for myself and family. Logged in as each of us and did a heap of searches - so hopefully plenty of points coming our way.

There are multiple levels of money being made.
Yahoo bumps up their search counts. Allows them to charge more for advertising.
Someone gets random data about searches and allows them to better target advertising.
Qantas gets branding on the browser leading to increased brand recognition.
Yahoo probably pays free cause who then buys points from Qantas.

Has anyone packet sniffed the toolbar yet?
Anything interesting?

Am analyzing this now. it looks pretty much like what you would expect. It thas your seach string attached to your session ID which I assume is tied to your QFF number.

Just so everyone knows, aside from the content of your search which will be tied to your account, they will also know what explorer and operating system you use.

I use Ubuntu Linux as my operating system, which by the way is free, fast, and stable, and I am in the process of writing a script that will execute search querries say every 5 - 10 minutes. I have a list of every wikipedia page (current as of a couple of months ago). I will get it to grab one of those entries and execute the command through the default search engine. It may or may not work but I am a huge fan of "sticking it to the man" so even if it takes more time than it is worth I will do everything I can to make it work. If I manage to find something that works and ff there is any appetite for it I will develop one for firefox in windows and mac as well.

Really admire your dedication!!
