and it won't let me select a seat now, QF website keeps giving me an error when i try to save my seat selection...

It did the same thing when I lost my seat that's no longer available on the updated flight. I think you'll need to give them a call to select another seat.

I had the same happen - you will need to give them a call to get your seat selected. (or wait until OLCI)

Damn my flight LAX-MEL QF94 on 15 Nov has been switched back to the old config so I've lost my 32AB and the good seats in row 80/71 are taken... and it won't let me select a seat now, QF website keeps giving me an error when i try to save my seat selection...

This might actually be a blessing - more seats for upgrades to J!

Still plenty of time for a swap considering there are a few 380 flights that have been delayed of late.

Always seems to be QF1 that gets delayed despite there being other A380 flights out of SYD on that day... is QF1 a curse?

It's hit and miss - but if there is to be an A380 delay in SYD, it's consistently been QF1 lately.

Flightstats.com seems to agree: On time performance QF1= 0.7/5, QF11= 1.5/5 and QF127= 4/5

QF127 has a pretty quick turn-around in HKG, QF11 has about 12.5 hours, and QF1 has around 15 hours. QF1 also departs the latest each day, and QF9 can also take up some of the slack for ex-SIN pax, so from a pure operational point of view, delaying QF1 is probably the best option if one must be delayed.

Having said that, I would expect a full service airline to have a back-up aircraft at its home base. There was a time when I was on CX for HKG-SYD, the inbound was very late, so they just used a back-up instead. If it was QF, even ex-SYD, they would probably just say come back the next day, very much like a budget airline.

That's what they are doing - they are telling you to go home and come back in the morning when the inbound QF2 arrives.

330's are easier to come by;)

Good point but not looking good for that either...

A spare 380 just sitting around????

;)

Yeah, all airlines should have spare aircraft jsut sitting around..........and we can all afford to have a spare car ready to go at all times if our car breaks down.

In theory at present there is a spare A380 sat around but that is due to the refurbishment programme and it is located in Manila (not very handy). Interestingly though this post made me look at the QF11/QF12 schedule (which has been 50/50 A380/B747) and from the 27th November it goes back to daily A380's so things will be further stretched with the upgrade programme ongoing, unless it is just being suspended for the holiday period? Glad my seats in J do not alter between config's!

QF11/12 operating as a 747 was due to the aircraft that needed maintenance in FRA. I think that's finished for now.

A spare car at home? Why not go all-out like this FTer who hires a chase car to follow him to the airport in case of bad traffic or an accident:

I pride myself on being obsessive: daily checks of all PNRs, tail-number tracking, hiring a chase car to follow me to the airport in case there's an accident, and yet I let this amateur at BA screw up my vacation.

Also see this more detailed post from the same FTer. Sounds great if you've got the cash.

Talked to A380 crew last week - apparently some customer do find the new A380 reconfiguration "compromising" - an interesting choice of words. Customers do however love the upstairs Y cabin.

Seriously, the amount of condemnation QF could have avoided by just adding/keeping one more bathroom for the J cabin. That's what happens when accountants get involved in running an airline.
