New Zealand Introduces 14 Day Quarantine for All Arrivals

Aussie resident in Auckland here - effectively marooned now yet feel it was a sensible move by the NZ government - Air NZ is allowing refunds for those due to travel up to 31 March 2020.

How are you marooned, @seandenn ?

I travel back to Oz for short 3 or 4 night trips several times a year - the new restriction means that each one would trigger a 14 day self quarantine upon my return to NZ. My employer is flexible and I can work from home at times but this would be pushing it and likely need to come out of annual leave plus would kill normal life during that 14 days (no gym, no socialising etc) - effectively killing off these short trips for me. But hey, it's not a bad place here and we do have toilet paper in the supermarkets ;-)

Ah - I misinterpreted your post then. I understand your predicament, I go back to PER on personal trips to see family once every 2 months or so - but looking unlikely I will be going back for a while, mostly because of the work predicament as well.

Foolish stuff from NZ.This cannot work unless EVERY country does the same.
How is it foolish? A government's responsibility is to care for it's citizens.

Surely a full lockdown is the only way to go.
Most people do the right thing but I bet many people won’t self isolate correctly and some will even deliberately not follow procedures
Sadly true. There is no defeating this virus though, only slowing it down. So if it discourages most people from traveling to NZ, well, it will have an effect at least.

Slowing it down is the whole purpose. It can't be stopped. But if it hits everyone at once and 20% of those will need intensive care then people will be refused treatment because they simply don't have enough available. And that means likely deaths because no treatment available.

This is going to cost QF an absolute motza. Even more so if the Australian Government follows NZ here, considering their large International scope vs Virgin with barely any long haul.

Yes that is correct. Sadly it is happening in Italy right now.

Agreed but as we have seen from AFF alone there are people that are still wanting to do status runs to NZ and suggesting even if in jest about staying in a hotel or touring the country. The only way to stop it completely is to put a blanket travel ban on and anyone entering the country goes to a detention centre or suitable facility. Both NZ and Australia are fairly unique in their ability to completely close down their borders and self isolate the whole country if they choose to

Yes. And that is being used as a kind of benchmark for reality.

I just listened to Jacinta Ardern. People may not like her politics, but she has a very good way of conveying the message.

Yes, we just seem to follow. The lights are on, but no-one’s home.

That’s not a fair statement. Considering the stage of the virus here we acted well before other countries. We instigated the public gathering ban before the UK despite them having a much more developed outbreak.

We were one of the first to ban arrivals from China - before New Zealand.
