New Zealand Introduces 14 Day Quarantine for All Arrivals

I did hear from a GP who is no Lib supporter. However she did say they are doing some things very very well. And some things poorly. Maybe we just need to cut all Politicians some slack. These are quite awful times and new territory.
Agreed. It’s rather frustrating at the seemingly lack of inaction from leadership, and not just in Oz. Rearranging the deck chairs...., so to speak.

Welcome to AFF, Sunday horse. A port in a COVID storm! Lets see if eny experts disagree with me, but here goes...
*who do I contact (virgin or Eithad) to cancel/change? Do I have a choice of cancel/change?
As it's Etidad points, I'd try them first and find out what they say. Emphasise you have been effectively locked out by NZ Govt - force majeure.
There are as many policies as there are airlines.

*will this incur fees/costs?
See what they say. There are so many cancellations on so many airlines and so mny different policies soit's impossible to keep up.

*have some non refundable accommodation? What (if any ) is Our rights with this (have been reading heaps of sites and someone did mention something about consumer rights?..now can’t find it .) Grovel, Refund, rebook or bad luck?
Check with the booking provider. many are offering cancellations As above, you've been effectively locked out of NZ

*some of this accommodation has been booked direct and some via Agoda/hotel.com. Do I contact direct or via travel site?
Whoever you booked with

Cheers skip
Thanks so much. Greatly appreciated

That’s not a fair statement. Considering the stage of the virus here we acted well before other countries. We instigated the public gathering ban before the UK despite them having a much more developed outbreak.

We were one of the first to ban arrivals from China - before New Zealand.
Football (and car racing) was all the go until yesterday. In fact gatherings aren’t a problem until Monday, it seems. And then a suggested 500+. Just expressing an opinion by the way, as are we all? 😉

And NZ self isolation doesn’t need to start until Monday. The problem with people such as yourselves bringing politics into a crisis is that it’s always one sided. Like going on about SM going to the footy despite the QLD premier going.

Even the ALP are being bipartisan about this. Take their lead.

UK are going cold turkey now,,, people to just assume they have it if they are sick and stay at home. NO testing unless you are severe. MY feeling is either a worldwide coordinated lockdown, or just do same as UK but protect where possible the vulnerable. Does anyone know if you can airport transit in NZ?

Foolish stuff from NZ.This cannot work unless EVERY country does the same.

It will work very well for them as they can relax it once a vaccine is out.

Also the number of CV 19 carriers may well burn out after some months.

The issue for all countries who adopt this approach though is how self-sufficient are they truly. NZ probably reasonably ok part from more specialised items and might have to just make do fora while.

People panicking and rushing to fly back on Sunday to "beat the deadline"

People just do not get it. This is insane. Governments need to just announce immediate changes to policy. None of this lead time rubbish.

At least one Australian state (WA) is the same. You can not order a test for exclusionary purposes.

It is the right thing to do. We know the virus is out there and it IS spreading in the community. It is no longer relevant if you have the virus or not. It IS relevant if you have the virus if you are hospitalised as it will inform the medical treatment that you require.

Slowing it down is the whole purpose. It can't be stopped. But if it hits everyone at once and 20% of those will need intensive care then people will be refused treatment because they simply don't have enough available. And that means likely deaths because no treatment available.
Seems to have worked for China where reports of infection are dropping.

“People such as yourselves”. Wow.

When was the politicians attending football bit that I mentioned?

Edited: Since edited to tone down my initial response. No offence meant by my postings. Maybe you misinterpreted?

Right!
Personal Politics has been creeping in here and is off topic as well as being polarising.
Please refrain from further political discussion unless it is specifically relevant to the topic.

FWIW, no one in Australia can productively visit NZ for a few weeks.
Yes but the point I was making, light heartedly, was that not everyone has been certified as carrying COVID-19. And that PD‘s visits to NZ have not been productive anyway.

Seems perfectly valid for NZ not to just single out Australians but to have a general isolation policy.

That is exactly where Aus will be in umm, a week? and this is exactly what happened with swine flu 10+ years ago. I'm getting old.

Interesting. In transit, is one actually in the country? I thought not. There’s no passport or immigration control.

The cruiselines consider that in transit is the same as being in the country.

Yeah but the Kiwis would be stuck with thousands if the ship docked there and there were many onboard, would be a big risk to the healthcare workers, cost to NZ health system etc

Same as arriving by aircraft in the USA - generally CBP processing even if transiting to another country.

AKL has airside transit.

Hmm.

Seems to me that transit (airside) would not be subject to the quarantine decision.
