New Zealand Travel Bubble Announcement

Some chatter of a Tasmania - New Zealand Travel bubble - perhaps even two-way

Good comedy read for a Friday morning.

Mr Gutwein acknowledged that current travel arrangements were fragile but said the pursuit of a travel bubble with New Zealand was worthwhile.

- You reckon? You can’t even keep your domestic borders open!

Now, where have I heard this before?

Oh wait...

3 cases of COVID today in Auckland. Mother, who works at LSG Sky Chefs and her husband and daughter. Had not worked since the 5th. Works predominantly in laundry.
I've wondered for a while about cleaning of aircraft turning around to go international - particularly the offloading and cleaning of catering supplies (which are heavily contaminated by nature) and linens. It would on the face of it seem to be extremely easy to be exposed - though I don't know how much in the way of procedures has changed.

I have tried to be excited at these annoucements. But I don't think any such bubbles will exist this year. Feeling quite depressed.

I live in Melbourne and am meant to be getting married in Hobart on the weekend.
That is very sad, for such an important moment in life. I hope things work out for you and your partner and the delay (perhaps not the first) is short lived.

Appreciate the kind words. We've been waiting since about May last year, and thought we would be fine. And a week ago we really, reall thought we would be fine.

There's still a chance. But a very slim one.

I can't speak for other airlines but I can tell you what QF does. QF serves their meals (which is water and the hot meal), then everything goes into a biohazard bag that is given in the passengers kit they get at boarding. Absolutely everything related to the service goes in this bag. Crew put this bag into special carts designated as biohazard waste. There should be no handling required by anyone of service items to be cleaned with the exception of the carts. So a big reduction on contact points for QF.

Linen probably goes straight into a bag and then to the cleaners. There should be minimal contact until it is washed and I assume all aircraft cleaning companies catering to International flights are wearing full PPE.

The link will be interesting as to how she may have caught it as she didn't go onto the aircraft according to the reports.

It seems tabloid media’s favourite PM has put Auckland back into another lockdown over three cases from a known source.

I really cannot see any situation where any form of “travel bubble” exists with these politicians striving for something that simply isn’t achievable

Both Melbourne papers are running lead stories on the websites arguing the Victorian Premier is on very very thin ice. I feel that hasn't happened at all in the last 12 months... Perhaps sentiment really is shifting. I don't think the media would've appreciated either their absence today or the lack of answers given by the health minister.

Perhaps they need to stop listening to people who tell them it is achievable.

it's been proven enough times now.

The NZ lockdown just firms up the VIC, SA, QLD and WA reactions though as ‘normal’

I can see that somebody changed what you said so I’m not sure of the context, but it does seem that a lot of individual governments are reacting quickly as it seems to be the flavor of the month. At some point, however, the general populous will become very sick of having their lives impacted so significantly for no good purpose. I can count on zero fingers the number of times I’ve been “locked down” like this in Sydney.

Clearly you don’t live in the Northern Beaches ;)
Even NSW has done it now.... you are right it’s flavour of the month

Ha yes, got me there. That said, it was localized to a single LGA and that was more than a handful of cases. I’m not entirely sure how upset they were about keeping the riff-raff out anyway, tbh

Australia suspends travel bubble with New Zealand after Auckland cases

Australia has suspended its quarantine-free travel arrangement with New Zealand following the detection of COVID-19 in a couple and their daughter in Auckland at the weekend.

After initially saying there would be no change to the travel bubble, Australia’s Chief Medical Officer Paul Kelly convened an urgent meeting late on Sunday with the chief health officers from NSW, Queensland and Victoria.

“It was decided at this meeting today that all flights originating in New Zealand will be classified as Red Zone flights for an initial period of 72 hours from 12.01am on 15 February”, a statement from the Department of Health reads.

Don't want to encourage people to escape Dodge.

I noticed recently that states seem to have cottoned on to people leaving a (for want of a better word) hotspot, and started trying to match what would have happened if the stayed put.

Which has resulted in..... lol.

I would love to have been in the room when they voted...! And glad the little states didn’t get a vote either.

At this point they might as well give up on the AU/NZ travel bubble, I don't see how it's going to work when it goes from no cases in NZ to travel bubble suspension all in a few hours.

Agree no point even bothering with any bubble. Just a bonus for the essential travellers
