New Zealand Travel Bubble Announcement

It seems tabloid media’s favourite PM has put Auckland back into another lockdown over three cases from a known source.

I really cannot see any situation where any form of “travel bubble” exists with these politicians striving for something that simply isn’t achievable
The source is unknown. That’s a major factor in locking down. You don’t know what cases you’re missing because they caught it from someone.
At this point they might as well give up on the AU/NZ travel bubble, I don't see how it's going to work when it goes from no cases in NZ to travel bubble suspension all in a few hours.
I strongly disagree. It’s messy for sure but again, 8 governments within Oz at least open and provide a window of opportunity for families and friends to meet. NZ don’t appear to want a bubble. They constantly make excuses. Hypothesising about the need for rescue flights. Name one Aussie state that’s required rescue flights?? Aussies have faced pretty much every possible scenario NZ could potentially face. There’s always been flights between Oz & NZ. No need for rescue flights.

They could at least allow a home quarantine scenario like WA, or frequent testing like SA. 3k or 3 tests, I know which option I’d choose.

All I see are excuses from NZ govt.

Endless Bubble trouble.

I am waiting until we actually get a NZ travel bubble.Until NZ agrees to no quarantine there is no bubble.
Exactly. I can’t see any reason for NZ to complain, given that they never opened up to Oz at all.

Bubbles are pointless, and will simply be a way of trapping your citizens overseas (or interstate).

I dont understand why they arent open to us given they keep experiencing the same quarantine leakage.

As a Kiwi I agree that AU-NZ two way bubble should have opened a long time ago, but it's one of those cases where it is easier to do nothing. If nothing is done, people will complain but that's it. On the other hand, if you open a two way bubble and suddenly you have to close the bubble, you will then have to deal with citizens who are stuck on the other side with nowhere to stay.

At least for state borders even a few hours of notice is enough as people can drive or take the bus across the border if need be, but the only realistic means of transport between AU and NZ is by plane and given what we saw with the latest MEL lockdown, plane tickets will sold out pretty much the second the bubble is suspended.

Yes agree, NZ shouldn't even bother trying, too hard for them to try and make some people's lives a little bit easier :)

I hear you, but that's the world we are in at the moment. I still don't know why AU refuses to put risk assessment for incoming international travelers. Surely it makes sense to let people from low risk countries to quarantine at home so you can focus on people coming from high risk countries? Right now people coming in from Singapore gets the same treatment as someone from UK, which makes no sense to me.

Open, shut them; open, shut them; give a little clap

Queensland is shutting its border to New Zealand after an outbreak of COVID-19 in Auckland, forcing travellers to quarantine for two weeks.

Chief health officer Jeannette Young said New Zealand was no longer a “safe travel country”, so all “green flights” would stop from 6pm on Wednesday.
It comes after the Australian Health Protection Principal Committee received advice that the level of risk in New Zealand had increased.

Good

I'm not sure what you're "Good"ing to.

Will be interesting to see how other States react.

They’re a troll that just makes such remarks whenever a border is closed 🙄

To be honest, I didn’t even know there was another “breakout” in New Zealand so I guess, to an extent, it’s good to see the constant reporting is moving away from “one case is the end of the world”.

I look forward to the next instalment. Queensland doesn't decide who enters or leaves the country. Nor does NSW. They can make decisions about Quarantine of course.

Good that QLD is being very proactive and looking after its citizens.

Ah No! 🤣 Just a happy Queenslander.

So, QLD Police cannot prevent people (including into BNE, from AKL) from leaving the airport? Is that what is being said, effectively?

I thought that it was already established that States may close their borders on health grounds. Does that not apply at airports as well?

I have no idea what would happen as a result. 🤔

The states can't exercise power in a way that is inconsistent with the Commonwealth's exercise of power over entry and exit from Australia. Internal Border closures were determined by the High Court a while back to be ok, but that wasn't about entry and exit from Australia.

In practice, while the Feds have exclusive control over the National Border, and the States manage quarantine once people have entered it all works together and needs to be sorted by the states in cooperation with the Commonwealth, and is supposed to be agreed and coordinated at National Cabinet.

Queensland purporting to close the international border is a nonsense. Either loose words, or loose reporting, or both. If you look at the detail of their direction, it's requiring all who come to enter quarantine. It's not excluding New Zealanders altogether.

Unfortunately there are some State Premiers who do not feel their State is in the Federation.
