New Zealand Travel Bubble Announcement

Why is anyone surprised, NZ doesn't have the ability to manage one single case without a almost nation wide lock down.

Of course there is no bubble.

There is no NZ Bubble. There may never be for all we know. 🤣

Always amuses me to see the ill-informed media sucking up the government press releases.

You are correct that there is no NZ bubble. The one way bubble is merely two bubbles with a passageway between them, with doors that only let people into the passageway from one side.

Interesting that this doesn't stop the media talking about the "one way bubble" with NZ, but never talk about the one way bubble with Singapore even though the arrangements are very similar (no quarantine on arrival after travelling in the north/west direction). The only reason I assume they don't talk about the one way bubble with Singapore is the government narrative .... with the NZ bubble the Australian government have something to crow about, and NZ is the one that has put the brakes on, but with Singapore, it is the Australian government preventing it from being a proper bubble.

geez, I'm so over NZ. I just want to tear my hair out over how our (and their) politicians are managing our way out of this crisis. And Dr Murphy stating that international travel might (if we're really lucky) re-commence in 2022 - I might be in an old folks home by the time this is sorted out.

This feels a little more serious than previous attempts. As others have mentioned; we won't be able to lock all the borders forever. At some point we will have to start managing the risk in such a way that allows for travel. And NZ beginning with Australia makes sense, given that we've both done very well for the most part (hotel quarantine leaks aside).

Keeping in mind, this will be a trial run for how to manage borders internationally until the risk becomes low enough (due to vaccination efforts) that border management specifically for COVID-19 will no longer be a thing. Instead, it'd probably just fall under general biosecurity border controls.

Waiting on the announcement (in 2 weeks time?) 😉

Edit: Now that we’ve had the announcement about the up-coming announcement.

Without some certainty about borders not closing without notice, why would anyone risk it?

Please... it's very simple to understand.

Last Friday there was an announcement saying there would be an announcement on Monday.

Yesterday was that announcement saying there would be another announcement on the 6th with a date.

The NZ PM also took the time at the start of that announcement to announce her plans for the week.

At this stage, we can expect the next announcement (6th) to be the final announcement of the date.

Rumours circulating in NZ media that the announcement on Tuesday will be a positive one, with the bubble set to potentially open at the end of next week. Nothing confirmed, but it does seem a little more serious than previous attempts

Hope they make it clear under what conditions it will be slammed shut and Aussie states do too.

It’s all quite pointless until states stop slamming the border shut to other states.

I agree that this announcement will be serious. I question the time frame. The airlines would need more than 4 days to really ramp up so I'd expect a very limited schedule to start with if that time frame is correct.

Exactly who on earth would risk it. NZ are even more trigger happy than WA. And their contact track and trace systems are very poor, unable to deal with even 1 case without a full city lockdown.
