New Zealand Travel Bubble Announcement

Ok, Sydney... time to get your act together. My A330 flight from NZ to SYD has just been downgraded to a 737. Might as well fly JQ next time 🤣

This seems to happen a lot these days…

Yep, a bit sad given the difference in J is quite big. I'm flying CHC-SYD-OOL and the upgrade was ~$400. It's a little bitter it's no longer a 330 but it's still a reasonable deal plus the status credits make it worthwhile.

I'm tempted to switch the ticket to CHC-AKL-OOL which I think will cost around $100 more but obviously avoids a transit in Sydney, there's plenty of seats so I can sit on the fence but I think less would go wrong via AKL?

Probably less risk with AKL than with SYD but not much in it IMO. AKL has virtually 100% of NZ's quarantine and accordingly has the most community cases. Also per capita NZ takes a lot more arrivals than Australia (as in multiples higher).

Boss flew out to CHC this morning, no issues. 11 flights scheduled to depart SYD to NZ today.

Great that some common sense prevailed and the pause was lifted as expected.

I've now booked for next Thursday (SYD-AKL). Fingers crossed!
Things to be prepared for...
1. Low number on most flights (this shocked me the most).
2. The Australian bubble is the first news story on every 6pm bulletin (has been for the last week at least).
3. Genuine fascination... many people I've spoken to haven't "seen" an Australian in over a year.
4. Questions about if you're concerned if the bubble will pop.

Not enough passengers willing to travel?

More likely due to the new community covid cases.

As soon an any state puts extra restrictions on an area, NZ close to the whole state for at least 48 hours.

I'm getting one "flight change" notification after another from Qantas today. Of course all rebooking options online were entirely useless but at least the wait on the phone wasn't too long and the chap on the other end helpful and friendly.

Except there are no extra restrictions in Vic. And NZ has not closed to Vic.

From the NZ Govt website: New Zealand's Ministry of Health is assessing the current situation in Melbourne. More information to come.

New Zealand government has not announced any changes to the bubble.

More likely it is low demand. I note QF has cancelled some flights between NZ and Sydney (i.e. unrelated to new cases in Victoria).

NZ has now closed the border with Victoria for 72hrs at this stage

Not surprising and exactly as I predicted. Vic put in place new restrictions re mask wearing indoors, gathering limits etc, so NZ closes to see if they have any impacts or the cluster continues to grow.

Quarantine-free travel status

Victoria to New Zealand
