New Zealand Travel Bubble Announcement

Doesn't NZ have more fully vaccinated though than Australia based on the % of the population?

Yep, and NZ is a great example of why the total doses is probably a better metric than total vaccinated.

Because they are only using Pfizer, their total vaccinated stats are going to follow the first dose stat pretty closely.

In Australia, most to date have been AZ, so there's a 3 month lag. Sure, total vaccinated is at 3%, but first doses is above 20%. That means the stats will look bad for 3 months, but then start going up sharply.

Even in an outbreak setting, most experts say it's better to have twice the population on a single dose rather than half fully vaccinated.

Surely it's the rate the doses that's important. I don't get the obsession with the total vaccinated stat.

I think in a few months Australia will be looking pretty good.

It doesn't have to be a 3 months lag. That's just the politicians trying to spin it out.

From the learned journals, anything over 8 months is fine, and if you're in a race, as we are, that's the way to go.

FWIW, I had my second AZ jab after 10 weeks (would've preferred Pfizer for the 2nd jab though).

I assume you meant 8 weeks, but whether it's 4 weeks or 4 months it doesn't matter, if you're handing out doses at a slower rate than Australia (NZ), we're gonna beat you in the end.

(NZ is only a bit behind us, just using them as an example)

I guess because this is the figure Governments like Australia and NZ will use before we ever see real changes to the way we are living.
Total dosage is a better way to measure progress towards that goal

Not just politicians spin. The real world experience is higher antibody production with AZ at 8-12 weeks.
With Pfizer it is virtually the same.
The UK and Canada both extended the time for the second dose to 12 weeks because they wanted to have as many people with some protection as possible.
However when the antibody levels produced by delaying the second dose to 12 weeks was up to 3.5 times larger in older people.basically it was mainly older people getting vaccinated in the first 2-3 months.

For you maybe but some of us were days away from a long awaited family reunion 😡

Oh we had family coming over as well... not anymore! Idiots. At the very least vaccinated people should be exempt.

If there is anyone who has butchered their vaccine rollout as much as Australia that it’s New Zealand and hence the mess we are all in

I've got flights booked for 14 Aug... fingers crossed.

But if the Flounge isn't open I don't want to go anyway.

At this risk of being off topic (and I've put something on topic so hopefully the mod gods will allow it)... do you honestly think the two countries with some of the lowest per capita infection rates in the world should get priority over the countries that desperately need them? The ones who couldn't close their borders and have to just "let it rip"?

WE ARE NOT IN A MESS!

I'm fully vaccinated due to fly back from NZ to AU tomorrow... hopefully QF keeps the flights (oneway) but I've booked a backup Air NZ flight just in case as they seem to continue oneway.

I’m supposed to fly AKL-PER today. I received a notification just after midnight from NZ that the flight was cancelled, then another notification 30 minutes later that the flight has been “conserved” and will be running. Phew!

NZ media reporting that the government will meet on Monday to consider if any extra precautions need to be taken when reopening the bubble, such as mandatory pre-departure testing for anyone coming to NZ from Australia.

Now, I don't really mind getting a test, but if the NZ government will only accept tests from private pathology clinics which charge ~$150-200 per test, that will make regular trips to NZ seriously unattractive - especially for families.

We're completely ok with having to get tested. Expensive but worth it (in my opinion). Would be nice if those fully vaccinated were exempt in the future.
