Nice wines I have drunk recently - Red or White

Hey JohnM, had a Marq Serious Rose on the weekend at a luncheon with friends. Impressive. Bone dry and a great entrée to the aged Bordeauxs we drank. Pics>2MB so will resize and post later.

A couple of Pinots have gone to the angels at the rate of half bottle/night for the last four nights:

MRE GS1.jpgMRE GS2.jpg

Both very good. The MRE was an excellent expression of their 'Half Acre' style IMO. The Gladstone is from N Island NZ outside WTG. Not sure if it's strictly in the Martinborough GI, but it certainly had the classic robustness and earthy characters of Martinborough Pinot - if not a little more so than the classics from there. Better on the second half 24 h later, whereas the MRE was probably the opposite (although the differences were marginal).

I was amused by the alcohol content of the Gladstone expressed to two decimal places! It was, apparently, a monster - but it certainly didn't show. The MRE was 13.5(0)% :).

Does anyone know something about the adhesives used for labels? The Gladstone has 'label wrinkle' that a few wines get when stored in wine cabinets. There are clearly different types of glue used, with at least one type reacting to the coolth (suck that up, grammar/spelling-hounds :p) & elevated humidity.

It seems to afflict only a minority of bottles so I figure it's something 'different'. Could it just possibly be... a biodynamic label... to send the WW writers into raptures!? :p.

Hey, don't look at me! (Why does everyone do that, anyway?)

Coolth.

QF were serving St Hallett Obst Shiraz on yesterdays QF682

I loved it, very smooth and drinkable. I didn't catch what the vintage was.

Had far too many delightful wines at a Rolf Binder dinner last night. Will try to upload a photo of the wine list later but there were a few lovely current versus cellared wines to taste. Wishing I was not at work today as a result.

Re: Nice Wines I have DranK Recently - Red or White

Made the snap decision to take MrsSed to Tassie on Friday, for a week. Hobart then east coast predominantly. Any tips on vineyards/wines would be appreciated. Without going OT too far any recommendations for Freycinet region accommodation or memorable restaurants/wine bars in general would be most welcomed.

If not too late, an article from The Age on Hobart and Tasmania may be of interest - Foodie road trip in Tasmania: Australia's most compelling foodie destination

Apparently Franziska Binder is not doing too well

Couldn't resist and EOFY treat after recent sale of product to NATO.

Drinking brillantly the 2007 is. Maybe got carried away with the glass but then again it does the job of opening up the wine nicely. Quite extraordinary wine.

Some freshly caught and filleted Stradbroke bream toasted in butter and herbs to accompany.

Calling RooFlyer, Steady and drron - to the Sedimental white courtesy phone please.

Sorry, just saw this post; hope I can still be of assistance.

Wineries along east coast - there's not a huge number, and they are all along the Tasman Highway once you get past the Coal River Valley (Richmond, close to airport). Pick of the bunch Springvale (pinot noirs) and Freycinet (whites). But look out for Gala, Milton and Devil's Corner, just before Freycinet as you head down Cherry Tree Hill - wines are OK but the views are fantastic!!

Tastings a lot less formal / structured than in say, the Barossa.

Accommodation: there's always Saffire at Coles Bay for about $1,600/night ;) - tasting menu including good wine was $300 when I last looked. Yes, I have stayed (don't ask) and it IS fantastic!! Otherwise Freycinet Lodge in the park at Coles Bay is good - cabin style (although it winds down a bit over winter). Loverly open fire in the big lounge. Self catering places: contact Freycinet Rentals Accommodation pages - Freycinet Rentals I would offer my own place there, but unfortunately (for you, fortunately for me :)) there is currently a 2 week booking in it!!

At Coles Bay, do the walk at least to the Wineglass Bay lookout at Freycinet National Park; better still keep going down to the beach. Take a picnic (including a nice wine - a Tas Sav Blanc, say from Freycinet winery!!)) to have on the beach. Stock up with pate, crackers and fruit at IGA in Coles Bay, near the boat ramps - (NOT the Iluka supermarket next to the Tavern). Buy fresh mussels and oysters at the Freycinet Marine Farm on the drive into Coles Bay (about 15km before) and have 'em on the beach. mmmmmmmm ....

Better restaurants on the East Coast of Tas end to close down over winter - try the good restaurant at Freycinet Lodge, or failing that, the Bistro isn't bad.

At Swansea, look at Shouten House or Meredith House/Mews for colonial style accommodation.

North of Coles Bay, I can't help much .. the bakery at Bicheno is good for lunch. Look out for the White Sands resort at Flalmouth, south of St Helens for a nice lunch (and accommodation, if it suits); they have their own iron House micro brewery on site. St Helens is nice to visit but the standard of accommodation isn't great. Blue Shed restaurant on the waterfront is great!!! Local seafood and nice wine selection. Go to the Bay of Fires - views over a white beach with ocean breakers is great.

Hope that isn't too late to be helpful .. contact me if you need other guidance (see PM)

'twas a good night, fellas :). The things you guys make me do :p.

Yes, an excellent night - funny how everyone remembers things differently.... I remember you as the local wine buff selecting the wines and then leading the rest of us astray....... But I am happy to take the credit for selecting those lovely wines if you insist

A nice Sunday relaxing with a good Tassie Pinot. Bright and vibrant, good fruit, bit of earth coming through, decent length.
