Nice wines I have drunk recently - Red or White

I shared this 2001 Blue Pyrenees Merlot and 2009 Mitchell GSM last night while dining out. The Merlot was sublime after a 30 minute decant but I found the GSM too astringent - we had finished our meal by then and I believe it would have been better with food

Who said I missed a glass of red tonight - although it wasn't much of a bottle but I needed it after playing 4 games of indoor beach volleyball tonight, including one overtime. We lost in the final :( but did bring home prizes - yes that's a stubby cooler ;) )

Came home to this (nowhere as good as the Bin 389)

I do love my talented neighbour who makes these - a chocolate ganache and raspberry coulis lollypop. Put back all the energy I had expended tonight.

Ah Friday.....And Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday......

Great vista Rocket09 - where is it?

The Hentley Farm The Marl Shiraz 2013 is ready to go.

As expected this is a good wine. Nice fruit. It's a well balanced medium bodied red. Young, but drinking nicely now. I'm impressed enough that I'm going to get two cases tomorrow, one for the cellar and one for drinking this winter. If you like Shiraz get on.

Following SuzieQ68 discussing packing Squid Ink in luggage I thought I would try a recent purchase of 2008 Majella sparkling Shiraz (deal recently posted on AFF). I consider it a nice quaffer - I was a sparkling Shiraz Virgin and I didn't know what to expect - I am pleasantly surprised. I think I need to also try a Glenlofty SV tonight :D

I opened my first Glenlofty SV last night - it took half a glass to adjust from the Majella SS but I really enjoyed it and will buy more if it comes up again. I am having another glass tonight and it is much the same after 20 hours as last night through the aerator. The Viognier changes the flavour dramatically from a traditional Shiraz IMO but in a way that I like.

Funky has been bandied about but is not a word I would use to describe this wine.

Found this gem while reorganising the cellar. Bought cellar door in wooden case of six. Off to the angels unfortunately.

Fresh blackcurrant and plummy characteristics with earthy undertones. Velvety mouthfeel supported by fine soft tannins.

Your ringing endorsement gave me enough confidence to give this one another go, but this time decant it for a few hours before drinking. Much improved but I just don't love this one. I'll happily save up the remaining bottles I have for a few years and see how they go (after tonight's go I suspect this will be one I really like in about 5 years) but still doesn't do it for me enough to buy more. Just leaves more for those (many!) people who love it! :D

Sunday night Pinots :

Nice small single vineyard Pinot from Gibbston Valley. Still young, drinkable after hour breathing after decant.

After finishing the Glenlofty SV last night I opened one of the Cracka 2011 StHallett Blackwell Shiraz - I was not at all impressed - I didn't rate it more than an average quaffer.

24 hours later and it is a different beast, a very nice Shiraz. I will try not to open any more this decade.

Steady, a lot of us are quite gun shy about the 2011 vintage. Was the Blackwell green and stalky and closed initially or was there upfront fruit Or fruit that needed a bit of conjuring? I've often been pleasantly surprized by 'lesser" vintages in the long run. Maybe the winemaker is more focussed, maybe the fruit selection process has been done without human intervention! Love to hear your thoughts.
