Nice wines I have drunk recently - Red or White

Family dinner 10 days ago, a 7 hour slow cooked chilli con carne complimented with a Grant Burge Balthazar Shiraz 2012.

Step Mother in law did her famous potato bake with French onion stock. She can come over any time with that dish.

The slow cooker fluid was a third of a bottle of either Cellarmasters or Virgin Wines - name escapes me.

Both meal and wine were full bodied and long in the mouth. Needless to say, the dogs only got the dregs because there were 6 adults and 3 kids to feed.

Dinner last Saturday - The Nocio aside, one of the best vino Nobile di Montepulciano. Still a little young tho.

A friend organised a Barolo master class at Kappy's yesterday for lunch (read all afternoon). Some fantastic wines, but hello acid and tannins!

The Conternos' Barolos are wonderful. The Giacomo Conterno , 9 from left, is excellent and the ones from Aldo are also fab. Siamo molto geloso! Try the Giacomo Conterno Barbarescos if you get the chance and you can taste the difference between the old methods in botti and new in barriques - wonderful fun.

What were your favourites and when is there an event for AFFers?

I'm a bit of a novice with Barolos, hence my thanks for my friend who invited me. He is a wealth of knowledge on Italian wines. There was the mix of new and old methods. On the whole I preferred the wines made in the older style, but some of the new ones were pretty amazing too. Not a single wine I didn't like. I need to get onto some of the cellar, but you really do need to wait for these wines to settle down.

The guy who organised it, flew over the wines himself (not with him, got them shipped) a few months in advance. I'm certain if there was sufficient interest he would organise another lunch like that. Cost was reasonable in my opinion. $200 for the wines and another $90 for food. There were 9 of us all up.

PM me when it's on again!

Been privileged to spend a couple of trips to The Langhe tasting local wines. Fab area to visit.

The new vs old is quite interesting with a trend now back to the older methods but using better vineyard management and more scientific winemaking. See if you can find a copy of the recent film on the history of the the area with the Barolo Boys.

Were they your choices or was that a group consensus ?

We moved in June 1991 so I guess I had better look at the reds in the cellar.

I moved from the Hunter Valley to QLD in 1992.Came with 1400 bottles of wine.
Thought I had better start drinking a few more.So even though I do buy a few each year I am now down to about 600.
Should see me out!

Based on your lifetime SCs are you ever home?
Of course I am worried that there is some vinegar in my lot so we may need to get a group together as testers.
Yattarna corks were not the best and I did get the old Grange tested and re corked.
If all else fails we could go champagne to forget any vinegar taste.
