Nice wines I have drunk recently - Red or White

Tonight for my elder son's 33rd :shock::shock: birthday:

Pork roast cooked according to methode JohnM:

Perfect crackling.

Started with Louis Roederer champagne and had an Amisfield RKV 2007 with dinner:

Worked very nicely :D.

I bought 1/2D the Bin 28 - always have a few of these in the cellar - with WISH/SH they are $25.30ea - RWT thrown in.

I'll have to get the Mrs onto the 5% wish card and starthere train. Silly I know, but I just haven't got around to it. My problem is also that click & collect requires forethought and planning, which isn't really all that compatible with my usual impulse alcohol buying tendancies.

I saw this in the Brisbane Bugle today. Is the 2011 RWT no good? Or are they trying to move the Bin series stock?

I hadn't bought much Penfolds for a long time until the wine fridge promo when I picked up a mix of the Bin range. They were fine, but overpriced for what they were. I might be tempted by this next time I'm at Dan's though.
Nothing wrong with the 2011 RTW - I think the latter ;)

My notes from the icons release dinner earlier this year:

2011 RWT. This wine surprised me and was a lot better than I was expecting. Tight nose initially. white pepper, mint leaf, plus the expected dark fruits and plum here. Chalky tannins. High- acid with well balanced oak. The palette exceeds the nose here and finishes long. 92 pts

It's a good wine. Not a great RWT, but certainly a well made wine in a difficult vintage.

Penfolds are are changing the release dates for their wines. Bin wines are normally release in March (I think) and the icon wines in May. They are now all being released together in October. So the next release is October this year, hence the need to move all stock prior to this release. Further discounting/offers closer to the time wouldn't surprise me either.

I'll make sure we all contribute to this thread from Saturday nights' Star of Siam dinner in ADL.

We will have:

Yalumba The Octavius 2006
Yalumba The Menzies 2010
Yalumba FDR 1A 2010
YAlumba FDR 1A 2011

plus a surprise Rockford (courtesy of Buzzard)??

Further from my earlier post on a great wine bar find in Romania.

Back in Oz with the pitiful couple of bottles allowed back in Oz. Yes, I know I could have brought more in and either 1) sneaked them past Customs or 2) declared and paid duty on the lot. However that would have meant carting the whole lot around Europe for a couple of weeks. Not a sensible option, unfortunately. :(

The other night I had some good friends around for dinner, and they were privileged to share some of the spoils (the white is yet to make an appearance).

My mate and I are Big Red drinkers (Hill of Grace, Mr Edelstone, Basket Press et al), preferably with 10 or more years on 'em. So it was with a little apprehension that I produced the 2011 Budureasca Shiraz; the winery is at Ploiești, north of Bucharest. Home page.

This was undoubtedly a really good wine (numbered bottle - #261 of 400). As I mentioned before, I'm hopeless at technical descriptions of wine, so please go to the links to get an impression. It was served with roast lamb & roast veges. All I can say is that the 2011 Shiraz was 'mature beyond its years'. Certainly more refined than most Aussie shirazes of that year, drunk now.

For a sticky with strawberries and cream, I brought out a very highly recommended tokay (tokaji) I bought in western Hungary. It was a "Beres Szolobirtok 2003 Tokaji Aszu 6 puttonyos" and is a medium tan-brown colour, a product of aging I was told; the grape is called furmint. I love tokay, but have never been a student of it; that's changing. Can I refer you to this link for more info on Tokaji - it explained to me the meaning of '6 puttonyos', which Google translator said meant '6 butts' (hmmmm...) , but actually relates to the sugar content :) . it also tells how Aszu tokaji is made. Worth a read.

It was a beautiful wine, but to be totally honest, I struggled to appreciate its superiority over 'run of the mill' tokays. But that's down to me, not the wine :) Certainly my mate's better half had a taste, then asked for a glass and she NEVER drinks sticky  Note that we, um, made a decent dent in the bottle.

The wine came from the Tokaji district, but appears to have been re-labelled by 'Vinum Primatis' which I think was the ?distributor I bought it from (with the Esztergom address).

I can feel a tokaji district wine tour coming up ....
