Nice wines I have drunk recently - Red or White

JohnM, you would have likely bought this wine from Vintage cellars, or (at a stretch) 1st Choice. It's a Coles distributed brand, and is usually $15, less 10% in a six. To be honest I don't think i've tried this one but have often thought about getting it. I love portuguese wines - they excel at blends (as above) and using a few native varieties as well.

Tick - Vintage Cellars it was.

Enjoying this fine Tassie vintage sparkling tonight - golden in colour, fine bead, toast and a touch of citrus. A very happy Steady

Dark inky colour, peppery dark raspberry nose, good medium body, savoury, long finish, chocolatey feel, quite satisfying, not worth $65 but at up to say 30, it represents good drinking. I definitely won't be sending this one back.

Dark Squid Ink colour, a nose I can't describe, medium plus finish, a softer style cool climate Shiraz with a current flavour, not a tannic wine, perhaps good for medium term cellaring, very good value for just over $18.00 a bottle.

Steady, we picked up some of the 2008 blanc de blanc recently, what a fantastic wine. Up there with the best Aussie sparkles I have had. Quite interesting that a 99 was still drinking well.

I picked a couple of the '99's up at Taste Tasmania 3 or 4 years ago - this was my last.

Another Aussie in Dubai.

The 2009 Sue's Cab is drinking very well now. Highly recommended.

So we had three events over the weekend, one black tie for a 40th, one posh Sydney restaurant for a leaving do, and one very nice sailing club on the Harbour for a catch up with a friend. My taste expectations have been re-calibrated over this last year to the 95 and above range since embarking on this VinoMofo (and others) wine journey.

It leads to two problems for me when I am on a night out:

a. you get slammed on the bottle price; or

b. you get some seriously average wines to endure.

I never really had this problem before, when I was one of those hapless wine buyers going into whichever was the nearer of Dan Murphy's or Liquorland, endlessly scanning the aisles for a wine with a pretty label and medals on it for under $30. Or one of those diners who just went for what appeared to be the cheapest but nicest sounding wine on the menu. So now I find myself politely pretending to like a fairly green or not up together wine and switching to the G&Ts!

For those in or visiting Sydney, looking for a posh meal out, I would recommend Chiswick Restaurant in Woollahra, just a few kilometres and a short taxi ride from the CBD. It's a Matt Moran restaurant with a good wine list. Unfortunately, it falls into Category A above, with anything slightly interesting in the Reds costing $80 to $100 +++.

To get on-topic, I did get to sample a nice and unusual wine at Chiswick Restaurant - the Eperosa Barossa Valley Synthesis Grenache Shiraz Mataro 2006.

It was Black Forest fruits, with a hint of sweet vanilla on the nose. The palate continued those tastes, but it finished with a distinctive smoky bacon flavour, which I wasn't expecting as it wasn't on the nose. It was subtle, but distinct. I really liked it, and the aging had softened this Barossa beast perfectly. A very nice wine, and 4 Vivino stars from me.

If only I didn't have to pay $86 for the privilege of trying this wine. Maybe I should think about buying the 2012 and tucking it away, as it got 95 from Halliday. Or ordering the 2006 direct from Eperosa at $28 a bottle: http://www.eperosa.com.au/enu/cp/Eperosa_2009_Order_Form.pdf

And as an aside, it was paired with the amazing Lamb Shoulder to share (definitely a huge hit and a big recommendation from me if you do go).

Great review....the triple blends do offer a lot of spice and depth. Out of interest, how many years would you say it had in it?

Thanks Beefarmer.

How many years does it have in it? Well, how long is an average hairless cat...!! Not sure, but it was lovely and smooth and well structured, so it will certainly stand more slumber time than the 9 years it has had. Also, I asked for it to be decanted as it was obviously closed on opening. It definitely got better as the decanter emptied. I would say it was in its sweet spot now, but probably at the beginning of that sweet spot. If you threatened me with something similar to what you did to that poor cat in the corner (!), then I would say another 2-3 years at a conservative guess for a well cellared one.

JohnM and I enjoyed these at your wine clubs Pinot and lighter reds themed tasting on Wednesday. The Tolpuddle came out on top, but great wines all round.

Nice to hear the Tolpuddle rated well in the line up as I have a few '13 and '14 laid down for a little sleep
