Nice wines I have drunk recently - Red or White

Dined at Bistrot d'Orsay last night and had a lovely evening.

See my post in the Champagne thread RE: Champagne

We also shared a lovely bottle of Sauternes. I am quite a fan of this one, having enjoyed previous vintages, the 2006 doesn't disappoint.

2006 Le Tertre du Lys d’Or
Sauternes, France
$70 per half bottle - 375mL (restaurant price)

You occasionally hear rumblings that this wine might just possibly – unofficially - be made from de-classifiedgrapes from Château d’Yquem... who knows, but it’s certainly a smart wine that packs a fair bit of complexityinto the glass. Honey, candied orange, spice, barley sugar & still a youngster. Fine, fresh, elegant & pure.

Sorry for not pics of bottles.

I am not very good at this internet thing...

Mrs GPH bought this little lot in Sydney the other night.

Opened the La Historia (second from left) in honour of 34 years of undetected crime:-) with Mrs GPH, really amazing. these wines are brought exclusively by an old school friend, he has anoutlet in SYD so PM if anyone is interested.
waiting for Buzz visit before we open any more :-)

At yesterday's lunch (plus copious quantities of Geoffroy Champagne before and after) with an old uni friend with whom I do reciprocal birthday lunches each year. It lasted almost 7 hours...

At the newly-opened Post restaurant in the redeveloped heritage old Treasury building in PER. Excellent food and great presentation. First time I've tried Geoffroy and I was impressed.

Final night in Madrid. Ate at Paradis just near the Westin Palace (whose food is unfortunately not the best) and had a 'loverly' bottle of Impreial Reserva 2009 at an amazing €36 from their wine list.

And here's some I thought of getting for JohnM to fill his diesel beast with. Almost cheaper than diesel.

Might come and live in Spain, would save enough on wine to have a few EK F trips back to Oz every year!

You know Adam works there? Did he have anything to do with the Flor Marche selection? I know he is a massive fan.

I didn't know that - but I recall him mentioning Flor Marche and I see his face in a pic with the winemakers on their web site. They had the Flor Marche SB in the winebar/winestore. My mate consumed probably a bottle of that while I hit the Geoffroy during our post-lunch disappearing afternoon.

Here are some pics of the food. It's very impressive. Small, but very tidy, menu.

A little off the grid tonight (nothing ventured, nothing gained ;).) Half of this. Very good - a juicy/slightly earthy sort of wine that reminded me of a good Chianti Classico. Very easy drinking. Struggling to remember where in PER I bought it - because I'd like more.

Comes from a region just NE of Lisbon.

Along with some (well maybe a little more than some) Champagne I tried these out in the QF LAX F-Lounge the other night

I didn't mind the Markham but a little more tannin than I prefer but quite presentable
The Manuscript Pinot Noir was very light bodied and another reasonable quaffer.
The Bin 28 was typical of a Bin 28
I really enjoyed the Atlas Peak - very smooth and balanced Cab Sauv

Well, it's almost the weekend, so it's time to try one of the top shelf'ers:

The KUPE Single Vineyard Pinot Noir By Escarpment 2013

Best young wine of the year for me. On Vivino I said:

"I rarely give 5 stars, especially for young wines. I had lost some faith in Antipodean Pinot Noirs. This will sound strange, but it smells and tastes like the 10 year Rockford Basket Press I had last month! I am astonished at how this tastes given it was bottled earlier this year. There's orange blossom, cherries, plums, chocolate and some earthiness on the nose and palate. It's silky smooth. Really smooth. This is the most up together wine I have tried in a long time. I was sceptical of the Kiwi 99 and 98 scores, but it's up there with those scores. It's not a Pinot Noir as you know it. If you can afford the price, buy this wine. You won't be disappointed."

I am bringing this to our January Sydney meet up. But I haven't quite decided whether this is for me and Beefarmer, or whether there will be enough to share ...!!

You make me laugh (a lot), Beefarmer!

It makes me want to open the (99 point) Serrat I purchased in the Halliday Hero Pack. I wish mof_ allowed us to purchase more than one case each. I dare not try it, knowing I am going to want more, more, more (and the Serrats are now beyond my budget, trading on Langtons for $200-$400 a bottle).

JohnM, you would have likely bought this wine from Vintage cellars, or (at a stretch) 1st Choice. It's a Coles distributed brand, and is usually $15, less 10% in a six. To be honest I don't think i've tried this one but have often thought about getting it. I love portuguese wines - they excel at blends (as above) and using a few native varieties as well.

Whiling away the time on EK434 back to BNE this morn waiting for my allotted shower time, I decided to use their snail internet service to read some AFF. This thread generated the following response!
