Nice wines I have drunk recently - Red or White

That's the one I took. Good, but not awesome.

I knew I liked you ;) You have good taste :)
Did the other one (forgot the name) have more structure? I find that the By Farr pinots are more elegant/ structured but the Yabby is a unapologetic fruit-punch in the palate.. a rich, delicious kind of Pinot... For easy drinking... perhaps too easy....
Can you please put some of your descriptive words together for the Pinot you guys liked the most for us :)

The other folks in the group are much better than me at the descriptive stuff. You already know that my scale is simple ;).

One member usually writes up notes of the group's comments for posting on a wine blogging site. Daver6 can either make some comments or we can wait for Allan to do his and rat those.

Oh MrM... I love your scale :) Besides... isn't it patent pending??? Don't back away now!!
Look forward to whoever wants to comment but please the simpler the better for me :)

Not sure which other one you are referring to. There were 5 other wines :)

Sorry 6, Forgot it was your post
The one you said you (all) liked the most... don't ask me to remember.. it was a page ago ;) :)

Ahh...the Tolpuddle. My notes are a bit sketchy. It was quite a feminine and elegant wine. Nose of bright strawberries and hint of cream (like the lollies almost). Palate had sour cherries, silky tannins and high acid. Certainly needs a bit more time but massive potential. I'll dig up the official notes for the night when they are published and post them here.

This one might be for you BlackCat and Alzoam but also others who like their reds from the Cooler Climate Regions is this fine country.

You may recall I purchased a [very reasonably priced] 12 pack of 97 Pointers from myCellars. In that Pack, I had acquired 3 bottles of the Clonakilla O'Riada Shiraz 20014:

2014 Clonakilla O'Riada Shiraz, Canberra District - myCellars.com.au

It's a lovely wine, and a bit different as it has this white pepper fizzy zing from the mid palate to the end. It wasn't too dissimilar to the Innocent Bystander Mea Culpa Shiraz 2012 BlackCat had recommended recently and that I had purchased through the Fo. It's lighter in body, but has that whole bunch character and taste of the IB, only with this cool zinginess that Halliday raved about:

“This has class stamped all over it from the moment you first taste it, sweeping away any necessity to describe the colour or bouquet; it creates a sparkling river of dark fruits that run from the tip of the tongue through to the elegant, but oh so complex, finish and aftertaste. Exhilarating.” – 97 Points & Special Value Wine James Halliday

Without being influenced by the Sir Halliday's write up, I completed my own personal review of the wine on Vivino, saying:

"Ruby in colour, and translucent in body. There's sweet red berry fruits on the nose with a freshness - almost an autumnal freshness. It's a light nose, leading to a clean and vibrant palate of red berries and a brambliness. And from mid palate to the medium length end, there's a white pepper zing that fizzes in your mouth. It's a lovely cool climate Shiraz. I struggle to see the 97 point qualities. It's more 96. But it's a very nice, well made - beautifully tasting - wine, and is well worth the $36 paid."

Vivino 4 stars from me.

For $36.95 a bottle, it's a pretty nice drop if you like the lighter style of Shiraz and you like your wine with a bit of something different about it.

Tintara Cab Sav 2010

At first, when opened (no decanting) it tasted like another table wine but after one hour it changed completely.
This wine surely can punch above it's weight, excellent value for money.

So we had three events over the weekend, one black tie for a 40th, one posh Sydney restaurant for a leaving do, and one very nice sailing club on the Harbour for a catch up with a friend. My taste expectations have been re-calibrated over this last year to the 95 and above range since embarking on this VinoMofo (and others) wine journey.

It leads to two problems for me when I am on a night out:

a. you get slammed on the bottle price; or

b. you get some seriously average wines to endure.

I never really had this problem before, when I was one of those hapless wine buyers going into whichever was the nearer of Dan Murphy's or Liquorland, endlessly scanning the aisles for a wine with a pretty label and medals on it for under $30. Or one of those diners who just went for what appeared to be the cheapest but nicest sounding wine on the menu. So now I find myself politely pretending to like a fairly green or not up together wine and switching to the G&Ts!

For those in or visiting Sydney, looking for a posh meal out, I would recommend Chiswick Restaurant in Woollahra, just a few kilometres and a short taxi ride from the CBD. It's a Matt Moran restaurant with a good wine list. Unfortunately, it falls into Category A above, with anything slightly interesting in the Reds costing $80 to $100 +++.

To get on-topic, I did get to sample a nice and unusual wine at Chiswick Restaurant - the Eperosa Barossa Valley Synthesis Grenache Shiraz Mataro 2006.

It was Black Forest fruits, with a hint of sweet vanilla on the nose. The palate continued those tastes, but it finished with a distinctive smoky bacon flavour, which I wasn't expecting as it wasn't on the nose. It was subtle, but distinct. I really liked it, and the aging had softened this Barossa beast perfectly. A very nice wine, and 4 Vivino stars from me.

If only I didn't have to pay $86 for the privilege of trying this wine. Maybe I should think about buying the 2012 and tucking it away, as it got 95 from Halliday. Or ordering the 2006 direct from Eperosa at $28 a bottle: http://www.eperosa.com.au/enu/cp/Eperosa_2009_Order_Form.pdf

And as an aside, it was paired with the amazing Lamb Shoulder to share (definitely a huge hit and a big recommendation from me if you do go).

Great buying and a very good vintage too!

Friend sent me a bottle of this. Never tried it before. Very nice. Good fruit, butterscotch, cassis and quite soft tannins. Tastes much like an 15 yo French Syrah.

It's easy like a Sunday [evening], so what to choose from the middle shelf of the Trophy Room..?

An Amelia Park Franklin River Reserve Shiraz 2012

And just like the song, this is big and classy and very, very smooth. I had been saving this. I only had the one - a Salvation Case special (most of the wines are okay, but you sometimes get a gem like this). I loved it, and knew if I failed temptation, it was going to be a winner.

On Vivino, I have just posted the following review:

IMG_1265.JPG

http://www.vivino.com/wines/12440614

"Oh my. This is big and rich, but silky smooth and velvety, all at the same time. It's very Amelia Park. There's plums and cherries on the nose, with a dash of choc mint. The oh so smooth palate follows with the juicy plums and sweet cherries, and tops out with a dash of cassis and mint at the end. It's a touch green at the end, but it will only improve with age given that balance and precision. Amelia Park - you have won my wallet with your silky smooth wines. VinoMofo - bravo for bringing me this wine."

That's Vivino 4 stars from me.

What can I say? But I want more. mof_, pleeaase secure another twelve truck loads of this wine. It's oh so drinkable now, but will surely get better. I don't have any to tuck away, but if I come across them in the 20s for sale - it will be a BOOM from me. I know they are all gone, but at least I can look forward to the next vintage. And with all the near misses we have had recently, it will be wines like this that keep me coming back to the Fo for more ...
