Nice wines I have drunk recently - Red or White

Tried the Mitolo Cantiniere 2013 on Saturday with some yummy Antipasto and soft cheeses. Agree with some previous reviews here - bit closed at first and needs some time to breathe and open up. Not a big wine but soft and smooth after an hour in the decanter. Think this one will do well after some medium term cellaring.

Followed up with an aged Tyrrells Hunter Valley 1992 Shiraz. Now I'm not a fan of Hunter Reds but this was very drinkable - if not a little funky and definitely some of that Hunter Valley mud.....

Interesting white for lunch. Quite dry, reminiscent of some Italian varieties.

Very nice Rioja. Took a while to open up and lose some bitterness but loverly drinking in homage to Cruiser.

Speaking of Cruiser, we followed his example...

Almost can't believe the wine prices here in Spain after London and Scotland. We went to 3* Michelin in Bilbao and the bottle prices looked like glass prices in London restaurants.

Why do Australian restaurants have to follow London practice and not Spanish? (Rhetorical.)

Not drunk yet, but just what I brought back from JNB - including the same as I had the other night and its much bigger brother. They will need some slumber time.

Thanks a heap to TheRealTMA and MrM.. there have been way too many words and not enough pictures in this forum for my liking ;) :)

Well, its Thursday and what better way to celebrate than with one of these little numbers....
Quite light but lovely balanced fruit and a touch of oak, very smooth. Too easy to drink ;)

Drinking the Mitolo again tonight...it has opened up quite nicely since last night. I'm trying not to finish the entire bottle on my own...

Tonight, the outlaws and I tried the Innocent Bystander Mea Culpa Shiraz 2012.

Now BlackCat is very glowing on her IBs, and she has, at every opportunity, been extolling the virtues of this winery. And so I was expecting a lot, especially for $60 a bottle and the $32 per bottle Fo price.

I wasn't disappointed. I have just recorded my Vivino review as follows:

"I love this wine. It's classy. It's smooth. Its not too alcoholic. It's clearly bio dynamic, and hand made. The nose is all cherries, big sweet cherries, and a touch of branchiness. With some airing, the palate is velvet-like, and very, very refined as the fruity cherries dance with the sweet, soft and glorious vanillin oak tannins, with small hints of the branchiness declaring the (whole-bunch) handmade makings of this wine. It's got a smooth finish and after taste making this a business class affair."

It got a Vivino 4 stars from me.

BlackCat - I had never doubted your fine tastes. But VinoMofo, I had doubted your over-exuberant (and sometimes, inaccurate) marketing ploys. Thankfully, I am getting that usual smug feeling from an excellent Fo purchase.

So, bravo - VinoMofo and thank you BlackCat for the endorsement. Greatly appreciated.

I'm glad you liked it! Recommending a wine can be a bit of a risk but I've been drinking IB a long time and they do make good wines. Their premium labels don't misstep at all (and I'm disappointed to see the new vintage has had quite a price rise!).

!!

It's very drinkable, isn't it?!

Be careful though - it has a 14.5% ABV sting hiding behind that smooth and easy tail. It's the only reason I decided to keep the remaining 5 bottles:

Sometimes it's nice to have a reasonable quality, smooth-drinking (not knock your socks off) kind of red wine. Especially during the week, on the work wind-down.

I've put the rest aside for tomorrow night. My mum is taking 3 bottles too as part payment towards my dogs vet bill (I was away at AFF9 so she paid it). Maybe I shouldve told her it was $68 :p

Some Spanish wine today.

This 2004 wine was awarded world's best wine from Wine Spectator 2013. Bought this one for €47.

And the mornings efforts...
