Nice wines I have drunk recently - Red or White

Re: Nice Wines I have DranK Recently - Red or White

Inaugural wine appreciation/poker night kicked off. Theme was bring a bottle of your favourite quaffer.
IMAG0021.jpg
Obviously some took this more seriously than others!

Highlight was the 2009 K1 Tzimmukin. This is a wine produced from cabernet and shiraz grapes that have been semi dried to produce a vino with port like flavours but with wine texture and weight. Magnificent length. Would purchase until I discovered the current vintage (2010) sells for $150!
The other serious “quaffer” was the 1998 Wynns Michael – past its prime unfortunately, but it’s always a great experience to drink old wine.

Re: Nice Wines I have DranK Recently - Red or White

I see that Halliday in his Top 100 today puts the 2013 Moorooduc McIntyre at 97 points and one of three Pinots in his top 20 reds over $20.

Once again you have personal not too much commercialised hand made plonk. Pedigree is a great thing.

Re: Nice Wines I have DranK Recently - Red or White

Last night I attended a Grand Cru Burgundy dinner at Lamont's Cottesloe, hosted by John Jens and Tyson Stelzer. What a fantastic evening an some amazing wines. Sadly, I left my tasting notes behind :(

There has been some great pics recently with animals, Million Dollar make-over cellars and amazing backdrops. Well, I thought I would make it real for all those working dads to young kids as I kiss my wife good night (as she heads out for a girlie catch up with friends and leaves me in charge of the brood), and a night of work ahead of me. So this is my fitting backdrop, as I tuck into a curious [early taste] of the:

Lindemans Coonwarra Trio Pyrus Cabernet Blend 2012

I picked this up from WineMarket for around $25 with discounts and cash back, and I am very pleased with my purchase, as you can tell from my recent Vivino review:

"I couldn't help myself. I had to try one young to see why this has such a good reputation (having picked this up through WineMarket on a limited promotion). I wasn't disappointed. It's French Nobility in a glass. It's regal, purple colour leads to a smell of sweet plums, blackberries and lavender. The medium body is smooth as the Cab Sauv, Malbec, Merlot and Cab Franc work seamlessly with French oak to produce a rich, sweet and savoury palate of blackberries, plums, charcuterie and lavender. Very seductive"

That's a very impressive 4 stars out of 5 from me.

This is drinking beautifully already, but that fruit and wonderful structure clearly show this is going to age nicely. The bottle says 10 plus years. I will see if I can hold out that long on the remaining 5 I have. I doubt it! One of the bargains of the year so far.

PS: Anybody buy the St George and try it? I didn't jump on the St George 12 as the expert descriptions didn't leave me wanting to buy it, and I won't buy for the sake of a good deal alone - I want to be able to enjoy it, like I did the Pyrus.

This was a cracker last night with some spag bol. It's from the N part of Martinborough and had a lovely earthy flavour and plenty of body. Despite what the back label says, I reckon it's still got another 5 years in it.

Now, half of this tonight, on the other hand, was a massive disappointment.

IMG_3111.JPGIMG_3112.jpg

First, note the cork (aka cr@ppy old tree bark) closure. It was the sort with the membrane top and bottom to try to protect from TCA taint - but look at the side. An imperfection along the full length had allowed seepage (although it was very slight).

The nose was positively awful - like decaying lawn clippings. Taste was not as bad and the texture was very good but, ultimately, the wine was very ordinary. I have one more, so I may have to crack it sooner rather than later to see if this one was an aberration or not.

One thing that amuses me is that the back label is into all the biodynamic, totally lacking any evidence-base, mumbo-jumbo, creating the 'sustainability' illusion for the chattering class - but they (unnecessarily) use a big, heavy, deeply-punted bottle with a size-16 greenhouse-gas footprint to give the 'sophistication' illusion.

Marketing BS trumps everything !

What a shame, JohnM.

I suspect it was that cork imperfection that killed this one. Glad you have another one tucked away. I had the Premium 12 at the Langtons Top 100 show last year, and thought it was very nice - although I have had better Pinots for less money.

I am intrigued by the Gladstone 10. I am a fan of the Martinborough Pinots. Did you pick it up recently? From your review, it sounds like my kind of wine.

Yes, I grabbed both the Pyrus and the St George. I have received the Pyrus but unfortunately the St George has yet to ship. So I'm still waiting...

I haven't drunk any recent vintages, but historically they have been some of my favourite wines, along with the Limestone Ridge. I certainly didn't have to think twice before jumping on the bandwagon.

I've had it for a while and more likely than not I got it from the Pinot Shop in Launceston - but it's not currently listed there. It was the only one I had.

Thanks JohnM.

I emailed the winery this morning and got a lovely note back with the name of their Sydney distributor too: Dynamic Wines. They don't have the 10, but they do have the 2011:

Gladstone Pinot Noir 2011

It's on offer at $29.00 a bottle ($10 off) for those that might also be interested in this Pinot.

Wozza, perfect backdrop for a Yalumba The Scribbler! I've tried both the 2010 and 2012 St George. Both good after decanting but will definitely benefit with time in the cellar.

I will be interested to hear if you actually receive it and if you do whether you will get 12 or 13. I have heard that winemarket do not have st George 12 in stock and that due to an ebay glitch accidentally listed it as available and therefore sold some. I believe they are trying to source some to fulfil the orders but no guarantees. Good luck

Wow. What a mistake. At least they are trying to honour their deal. That would explain why there has been such a delay to the delivery of this one. Keep us posted good people who ordered the St George ...

That would explain a lot. I hope they are able to honour the deal, however a little bit of communication wouldn't go astray. I don't mind when businesses mess up, but I do mind when they don't communicate about problems. I sent a message to their eBay account yesterday, asking when they hoped to ship the wine, but have yet to receive a reply. Leaves a nasty taste in the mouth, and it's not sour wine.

EDIT: I just received a reply to my eBay enquiry. They say they are awaiting stock from their supplier.

Father-in-law brought down a special treat when visiting for his birthday.

1994 Moss Wood Cabernet Sauvignon

Very dark in colour, and a great fruity nose. Really supple and smooth texture, with a long finish. Felt too good for the spag bol we served it with!
