Nice wines I have drunk recently - Red or White

d'Arenberg Coppermine Road cabernet sauvignon 2005:

Now this is one powerful cabernet - the first sip upon opening was like a figurative smack in the face with a wiffle bat! Immensely powerful blackcurrent/cassis notes, with still powerful tannins. Plenty of secondary flavours - coffee, spices, vanilla etc. Would recommend additional sleeping time. Ended up pairing well with a spicy bolognese.

Have just been reading Decanter and this is amusing...

"Stories abound about Churchill and alcohol, from drinking hard spirits in the early hours of the morning to claims that he drank 42,000 bottles of Pol Roger Champagne throughout his lifetime.

Perhaps the Champagne figure has been elevated to mythical levels, given that it would have required Churchill to drink 467 bottles of Pol Roger in each of his 90 years.
Even the eponymous Champagne house, which named a Cuvee after him in 1975, says Churchill didn’t touch the brand until 1908, when he was already in his 30s.
Outside of his role in World War Two, Churchill’s political career rarely ran smoothly. His commitment to wine was unswerving throughout. Here are some of his best-known lines:

On Champagne:

‘In success you deserve it and in defeat, you need it.’
‘Champagne is the wine of civilisation and the oil of government.’
‘Remember gentlemen, it’s not just France we are fighting for, it’s Champagne.’
‘Meeting [US president] Franklin Roosevelt was like opening your first bottle of Champagne; knowing him was like drinking it.’

On Wine in general:

‘Dinner would have been splendid…if the wine had been as cold as the soup, the beef as rare as the service, the brandy as old as the fish, and the maid as willing as the Duchess.’
‘Madame, I may be drunk, but you are ugly, and tomorrow I will be sober,’ – reportedly said in the House of Commons to Labour MP Bessie Braddock.
‘I have taken more out of alcohol than alcohol has taken out of me.’

Katnook Estate Prodigy shiraz 2002:

Still a dark red/purple colour. Black fruits and oaken vanilla, with savoury spice, and slightly sweet finish. Velvet smooth tannins. Overall a supremely luscious, smooth, drink right now, with time having taken an edge off the big fruit taste. Excellent drinking. 93 on CT from me.

Cape mentelle cabernet 2011 was an excellent wine. Also most Great Southern red wines 2011 were good as well

Aerated very fruity but not a fruit bomb. Smooth but give it 5 to 10 years more and I believe it will be a joy to drink that words wont do it justice. FWIW still got 09, 11, 12 and 13 vintages in the cellar.

Bastille Day celebrations at the neighbours. Opened and double-decanted in preparation...

Chateau Pontet-Canet 2001 - Pauillac 5me cru. Cork in good nick. Fingers crossed it's good.

Edit: colour still a dark red. Cassis and dark fruit on the nose. Medium bodied, with decent fruit though receding, and that taste which I've read might be "graphite" or pencil shavings. Tannins are still there, 15 years on, but really quite smooth now. Finish is medium-to-long. Really nice drinking, but I'm not sure it's worth what I paid for it - probably better value if you look around.

Single figure temps on Eumundi Range on the not so sunny Sunshine Coast.IMG_3799.jpgThe Warramate, a recent VM deal opened nicely after a decant. The remainder of the case can have a little rest in the cellar at least until the end of the decade.

Been getting through my quaffers lately after nights spent getting ready for a mediation session with one of our neighbours regarding our shared retaining wall...

Seems all that red wine and 18 months of work paid off after a 4 hour session in mediation. One agreement in place, one more to go...

Off to my parents for family lunch (Thai takeaway) so will be interesting to see what red my father offers for us to drink...
