Nice wines I have drunk recently - Red or White

Another from Dans was a Charles Cimicky Trumps shiraz 2014 which was allright, a thinner more approachable now style with brighter fruit. It too was a little closed , twas nice but no wow factor like the linke.
I had a 2009 Trumps recently that was sublime, and punched well above its price tag.

It is so good to pull one out of the cellar from a non discounted seller such as Dannys or Vintage cellars and seriously get the wow factor out of it many years later knowing it cost you under a twenty. I know we have our taste worlds and this won't make sense to some, but when they really over deliver, there is a great satisfaction. Of course, the Fo's bargains have overdelivered on many occasions but I am coming to this from a different angle I guess. Once again, good is good but when great used to be good, now you can really smile. I had to read that last line twice to be honest. It kind of sounded odd as I was typing.

So when it looks like this in the morning-

I like to drink something like this at night-

Random quaffers (no photos);

- Clarendon Hills Brookman Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon 2008
Deep purple colour. Cassis and blueberries on the palate, with dusty tannins, but not overly so. Lingering finish with earthiness and spices. Nice. 91 on CT from me. Better than I expected, not being one of the higher-end Clarendon Hills labels

- Hewitson Miss Harry GMSCC blend 2013
Bright ruby in the glass. Intense floral and strawberry nose. Sweet and smooth on the palate - loads of berries, berries and more berries. A hint of oak. Length is medium at best. Good mid-week quaffer. Probably not the best drinking in the middle of Sydney winter, and more suited to a warmer evening.

Mollydooker Enchanted Path 2006:
My second bottle of this. It's still amazeballs (is that still a thing?) in my opinion. Shiraz and cabernet complimenting each other well, with cassis and dark fruits on the palate with spices and some oak vanilla notes. Long finish, well integrated tannins - the smooth taste belies the 16% alcohol. No heat detected at all. Yummy.

Voyager Estate Cabernet Merlot 2009:
Voyager Estate Cab Merlot has always been one of my all time favourite Cabernet Merlot blends - it always seems to be a in a slightly different place to other Bordeaux blends. Langtons classified, and 97 from Halliday for the '09 raised big expectations.
Tell-tale cassis notes, dark fruits, herbal notes, but at the same time a slight sweetness, with tannins medium and at most, slightly dusty. Some oaken vanilla also present in the background. I was surprised to find out that it was 94% cabernet/5% merlot/1% petit verdot (thought the merlot would be higher). 18 months in 50% new/50% old French oak.

It was our favourite wine from the MR trip. They had the 2003 at the cellar door that was sensational.

Dans still have the 07 for $50 before discounts which I was very pleased to discover on returning home :)

Tonight was time for my special wine.A 44 year old port that I brought down to NSW to remind me of the wine crime of the century-

The closure of Morris Wines in Rutherglen is a devastating blow: for the people who will lose their jobs, for the heart and soul of the region, and for Australian wine lovers, especially those of us who think the Morris Rare Muscat is one of the greatest wines in the world.

Parent company Pernod Ricard (the huge drinks multinational that also owns wine brands such as Jacob’s Creek and St Hugo) announced last week it is shutting the cellar door at the 157-year-old Rutherglen winery at the beginning of 2017 and in the meantime putting the assets on the market, to be sold separately — the buildings, the vineyards, and the extensive stocks of fortified wines, including the famous muscats.
Pernod Ricard have said they are keeping the Morris brand but don’t intend to make any more wine under it — unless someone wants to make them an offer now for the whole lot, in which case they would consider selling the brand, too.

Damn those French.
A bottle of the Morris 1972 vintage port.Damn nice too.

Vickery 2016 eden valley riesling. For a young wine it is already obvious it is outstanding and will go the distance. Aromatics, beautiful fruit, lemins and some slate, amazing length. I am going to have to get more at less than 20 bucks.

Daver6 how was the St Henri 1996, I also have a couple of these which I am thinking of cracking. Ready to go you think?

This particular one didn't show well. Ever so slight TCA. However, I've consumed previous bottles and have one left. Ready to drink now and based on previous bottles in a really great spot. I don't think you will see much improvement with further aging, but still not about to fall over either. If you have a couple of bottles, definitely crack one. This is actually the second bottle of my '96 St Henris which has been corked. Really annoying actually.

I had a 1999 389 last Saturday night, amongst a few others and it too had lost a bit of that spright, that zest, that acidity, you know, whatever it is called. It lost the expectation factor I was looking for, but it wasn't my wine so didn't feel too bad. I know how one feels like this and I think of Dr ralph in this regard. I am not commenting in a bad way, but crikey , with his stock levels, and with the fact he starts drinking reds when they are 10, woweeee. I reckon he has two things going for him. one, he buys known cellaring potential wines. Two, they would be immacutaley stored. Good luck to him, and bad luck here.

I brought along a 2008 Tallarook Victorian chardonnay and it was damn good. I also brought along some lolly water, the 2013 Zones footstep Rose. Quite refreshing if the truth be known, and so, so east to drink.

Now this is the surprise wine that some else brought to Thai. The Irvine cheapie, the seventeen bucker springhill 2013 merlot. what a stunning wine it is. I couldn't believe the retail price after checking on sunday. memories of the grand Irvine are still firmly etched from January, but this thing is a medium to full bodied, fruity, not undercooked sensation. easily an 8/10 considering the difficulty with the varietal. could it pass for a thirty five bucker. Easy. it was so Moorish to drink as well, and you probably would believe me if I said it was better that the 389. The 389 still had the oak, the body, the tannins but it had peaked. That's the big difference so in this case, the Irvine was probably the best wine on the night. Strange but true.
