Nice wines I have drunk recently - Red or White

Thoroughly divine, the last one I had was at RooFlyers place with Buzz, Major + Mrs Major and Uppy + Mr Uppy - but it was after an aged Shiraz and it didn't shine.

From memory, you were at the AFF May meetup that Wozza organised - how did it compare to the 2004 (if you can remember)?

I think the boquet of the 2004 was even stronger than the 2000 but For me the '00 tonight was many times better. I do think the '04 got a bit lost in the many wines sampled that night. I have the matching '04 (supplied by you from memory... ) as a prize from that night to try sometime in the future :)

More mid-week drinking - nothing stands out after the Voyager Estate Cab Merlot from the beginning of the week:

2013 Cape Mentelle Shiraz:
Drunk over two days. A ripe shiraz - more red fruits than dark. Vanillan oaken flavours. Muscular tannins. Medium finish. Quite acceptable. 90 on CT from me

2009 Chapel Hill Shiraz:
Nice receding black fruit balanced with secondary flavours, but just a bitey, acidic, finish that really detracted from the experience. Probably should have drunk this a couple of years ago. 87 on CT from me.

2013 Sensi Sangiovese/Syrah Mantello Toscana IGT:
Lots of hype about this - some high scores, including CT. Can't say I agree, and maybe I have a dud bottle. There's red fruit here, and a decent structure. But it seems to be hiding behind a wall of vanillan oak. Not a fan at all.

So, to kick start the weekend, the Grant Burge Shadrach Cabernet Sauvignon 2006:
CM gave it a 95, JH a 90 - FIGHT!

For mine, I can see where Halliday was coming from. This is tannic, even after 10 years. I can only imagine what it would have been like 8 years ago. However, I agree more with Mattinson's review. This is a big, bold Barosso wine - just cabernet rather than shiraz. It has taken about 4 hours to open up, but there's cassis and plums, herbal notes and a long spicy finish. The tannins are still a bit grippy, but if you have these, you can drink now, or hold for another 5 years. This is a well constructed wine IMHO.

Thanks for the feedback. It's relatively hard to get hold of these (especially at a reasonable price!), so always looking for direct comparisons from people who've tried different vintages to work out where to send my $$.

Have you tried earlier vintages and if so, how did this compare? I've previously had 2011 and 2012 through VM, still have a few bottles left. I recall enjoying without being 'wowed'.

No - haven't tried earlier vintages. I have a few of the more expensive Sensi's hanging around - thought I'd tap the cheap one as an experiment. And I guess I got what I would expect for a ~$20 import.

:)! After missing out a few times I got my hands on the VIM Sensi Brunello during the week. I'm expecting entry level, at least judging by the going rate for Brunello (here and in Italy). I'm fine with that so long as it's decent for the price!

There were a few of the 99 vintage going for not much on langtons recently.. Am assuming a dud vintage?

Didn't get the high-end scores. Also, with something so old, I guess you need to be a bit wary of how well it's been stored. Langtons don't really give much guidance on that front.

Just had another regular post dinner drink at Citavino in Newtown. This place is fantastic, the owner knows wine and knows his locals, I don't even order anymore, he just pours me something he thinks I will like. And tonight what he was pouring was fantastic.
I don't know the winery, but tonight was my first experience with South African Pinotage. A local grape of South Africa, is a hybrid of Pinot and Cinsaut, and it creates a very interesting wine.

Again I don't know the winery, there seemed to be a lot of cases (well maybe 20) in the shop, and I will be going back for a few bottles. Highly recommended to pop in for a glass but also recommend a visit for a few bottles, not cheap, but the guy runs one hell of a ship with some fantastic wine.
