Nice wines I have drunk recently - Red or White

Grosset 2014 Alea Riesling (Clare Valley)

IMG_0771a.jpg

Listed as off-dry, but was a little sweeter than anticipated. Certainly towards the sweeter end of the riesling spectrum. Not that there is anything wrong with that. The flavours are delicate and well balanced, with stone fruit prominent on the front palate, supported by flint and a subtle citrus spritz on the back palate. A truly beautiful wine. A 95 on CT from me.

Well it seems that a little speculation sometimes pay off. My First Creek 2010 Cab Merlot arrived on Thursday, and what a lovely wine it is, a real surprise packet. Here are my tasting notes.

Liz Silkman, the winemaker, is a finalist in the Gourmet Traveller Wine Winemaker of the Year (see latest GT Wine).

Went to the Coonawarra Roadshow in Brisbane yesterday - On the tastings I found the following memorable

1.Highbank wines - first time I had come across them but very smooth wines
2. Hollick aged shiraz from 2005
3. Di Georgio wines - very pleasant wines
4. Yalumba - Cigar - probably my favourite Cab Sav of the tasting
5.Patrick aged riesling - not a wine to drink on its own for me but a wine I believe would be a fantastic food wine

TD, I had a ticket but had to give it a miss due to kids footy finals........should have gone. Our regular lads went and I caught up last night. They thought the Petaluma was their standout and the Majella Shiraz / and sparkling was excellent. The Cigar is always on our radar and we split a case each vintage. They did however say that the venue was too small and crowded, it was much better last year.

Agree about the venue - far too small - Did not try any sparkling as not something I enjoy however liked the di giorgio fortified shiraz - cross between a port and shiraz - won't be to everyone's taste but my friends and I liked it

There are some interesting Pinotages from WA you should search out. I've had a few nice ones over the years. I guess it developed because of the SA connection and expats in WA.

Dominique Portet in the Yarra Valley also does a pinotage under the Ten Men label which is also a different take on this wine. Less smokiness and more blueberry but an interesting drop nonetheless. Good to see this forum exposing some to new varietals! I never drank feteasca neagra or saperavi until I visited Romania/Moldova and Georgia respectively but they are now well on my radar and find their way into my wine collection.

New varieties are interesting. I now have somewhat of a passion for Tocai Friulano after spending 10 days in the Collio area in Friuli-Venezia Giulia. Interestingly, when we we visited the legendary Edi Kebber near the Slovenian border, his son (I think) was down with Quealy in Mornington Peninsular working a vintage for them with Friulano fermented in amphora as the methods from Collio.

Later we then found some being grown by Cooper Mountain Vineyards in the top of the Willamette Valley.

Another interesting one we'd never tried until a two years ago was Pecorino from Le Marche in Italy.

This evening's bottle - 2015 Landhaus Hoffman Shiraz (Barossa)
Intrigued both msYoda and I so much I had to share it with you

Notes:
Upon initial opening on the nose was heaps of wood, a hint of vanilla, black? berries, double cream, a splash of spice, soya sauce and salt.

On the palate I found it very confusing! It smacks you on the tongue with big fruit, followed immediately by an almost hollow sensation, yet incredibly smooth mouth filling juicyness. Oak, fine tannins, white pepper and potentially even salt.
2nd glass emerged in to blackberry, floral flavours with a hint of bark.

Purchased as a recommendation from the Wine Society in Ultimo just last week.

Got this one with recommendations from Jasonking and what a bargain at $18.75 (down from $55). Don't know why it was discounted so much as it completely worth the original price tag IMO. Another solid drop from OT. Should be decanted for few hours.

First wine hasn't been consumed yet and not likely to for some time, but it was delivered to my work and excited me as I'd been on the hunt for this for a while. I used the $150 Amex/Langtons credit and splurged. The champagne...well I needed to celebrate aging a little more yesterday.

Did you get the Giuseppe Quintarelli at auction? I've got one credit left to spend (tonight i guess!) and also looking to splurge a bit, but couldn't see the 2006 on the Langton's website. Anything else Italian that you might have seen when looking that you'd recommend?
