Nice wines I have drunk recently - Red or White

I take it the client wasn't the Aust Bureau of Statistics?

Certainly not, although I hear they may be looking for some consultants to help with their website :p:p

FWIW, we were actually quite well behaved at that restaurant, despite my insinuation that we weren't.

I enjoyed a couple of glasses of this beautiful Cabernet Merlot with lunch yesterday while looking out over Paris - it doesn't get much better than that! My rating: just gorgeous!

I also had to include this pic just for Wozza! This was a new one for me - a straight Viognier. I drank the whole glass and it tasted better with food than without but still just like any other white wine, albeit a sharp and perfumey one. My rating: tolerable ;)

I think so - but paging Daver6...
Hmm. I was some 20 years ago and I thought it was someone like Pierro but Google has not been my friend here! This indicates the first Pinotages are very recent... The Pinotage Club: Australia Joins the Pinotage Family
I remember not being very impressed with it and have not sought Pinotages further, especially after discovering good Pinot Noir from Martinborough 20 years ago and then the rise of Central Otago.

Welcome comments!

For those of you who are interested in a little speculation, they also have a 2010 Cabernet Merlot on run-out sale for $10 a bottle. I haven't tasted the cab-merlot, but I've decided to roll the dice on this one. The worst case scenario is that I end up with a dozen nice cooking wines.

Well it seems that a little speculation sometimes pay off. My First Creek 2010 Cab Merlot arrived on Thursday, and what a lovely wine it is, a real surprise packet. Here are my tasting notes.

What a cracking wine. Medium bodied with a lovely mellow mouthfeel. Rich and vibrant, dark and brooding, very moorish, all at the same time. The blackcurrant, boysenberry and sugar plumb fruit is still fresh, and beautifully supported by a dark core of cigar box, old leather, nutmeg and spice. The oak is toasty and well integrated, the tannins ripe and fine. The secondary complexity is very sustained driving a very long finish. Bloody delicious actually, and just kept getting better with more air time. At $10 a bottle it's brilliant value. A 94 on CT from me.

For those of you who are vinomofo tragics, the flavour profile sits somewhere between the Fox Gordon Brothers and Sisters and the Maverick Twins cabernet blend, although it is a little richer than either of those wines, courtesy of the merlot. It's so good I immediately ordered a second case. I notice that there are now only a few cases left, so jump in quick if you're interested.

I'm not aware of any Pinotage being produced in Australia. Doesn't mean there isn't, just not to my (limited) knowledge.

Wine Companion lists a few producers making recent vintages:
Ravens Croft Wines (Granite Belt)
Ten Men (Yarra Valley)
Thick as Thieves (Yarra Valley)

Most have pretty ordinary scores - would stick to the South African stuff IMHO

One for JohnM. Sunday night Pinot series:

Still a a little young but drinking well. Nice fruit on the palate, tannins are on the low soft side, 'fine grained', and the over-sweetness of CO has moderated. Lovely berry characters on the long aftertaste. Perhaps a little sweet on the aftertaste.
