Nice wines I have drunk recently - Red or White

Following a 2.5 hour decant I have just finished my first glass and pretty pleased with it. If I were blind tasting i may have mistaken it for a Pinot. Medium body, red fruit, a zesty acid and silky but slightly drying tannins. Some alcohol warmth and a nice long finish. Yum

The bottle of Norfolk rise 2015 I opened last night has developed a bit overnight. It still has a great weight of fruit and has developed a slightly smoky meaty palate in a good way. There's still a lovely ripe plum thing underlying it all. Ten bucks!!! What a bargain.

Lovely. Tannins are quite forte, probably should decant and leave for a few hours. Then pigs might fly...

I might leave it for a while, while this is burnt on the BBQ...

It's just a Coles marinated butterfly lamb, but quite yum, especially with duck fat potatoes and Greek salad. (Yes I know I should be drinking a Cabernet, but, hey, this is Brisbane after all!)

As you can see from this photo snapped a few minutes ago, my lamb needs a few more months

Another of my favourites.

Our Saturday night treat, very happy with this wine, such a shame I only grabbed one. The aroma hit me as soon as I twisted the top with off with wafts of aniseed. A very smooth wine on the palette with some white pepper, balanced acidity, mild to no discernible tannin and a good length on the finish. To sum the wine up a in a couple of words beauty and balance.

I have some of those, how is it drinking?
The good shake of the bottle, decant and 40 minutes rest did wonders for it. At first it was closed, tight tannins, a little musty and musky. Oxygen and breathing did wonders. It opened up to a lovely rich wine with good fruit. So, decant and leave for 2 hrs.

Drunk with this...

The '10 Moppa Springs is just simply sublime now, im picking up red currents and blackberry now, and the mouth feel - oh my :o velvet cream.

Tahbilk Reserve 2001 Shiraz

The last year before they brought in the Eric Stevens Purbrick name I believe.

Just in a lovely place now. Silky mouthfeel, good length and lots of dark fruit flavours. Quite a bit of sediment.

These are being offloaded regularly on Langtons at around $25+BP. I notice the winery are selling them in a few of their mixed packs this month, so there must be a fair bit of supply. Worth a look at that price imo.

Grant Burge Abednego 2004

A grenache, shiraz and mouvedre blend, in roughly equal proportions. Not a bad wine, but not a knockout in any respects.

Nose was a little muted, but the palate of plums and spice was enjoyable. Not a very long finish, and a bit of alcohol heat. Lots of sediment.

I'm guessing not one of the better Abednegos. Will perhaps try the much better rated 2005 next.

The Bin 28 slow vertical continues. This time it's:

the Penfolds Bin 28 Kalimna Shiraz 2008

Better than the 2004, but not as good as the 2009, here's what I picked up last night, laptop open, drafting another sale agreement:

"This is dark, brooding, sweet, smokey and really rather nice. It's right in its sweet spot. And is a fine warm climate, South Australian, multi region Shiraz blend from one of Australia's finest wine brands.

The intoxicating nose and dense bodied palate sing the same song of blackberry, sweet but muted liquorice, chocolate, salted olive, cigar box, wet pebble and spice. I love the balance and drive of those flavours across the palate. And an aftertaste that tingles away an age.

Drink now as it's in its prime. Or within the next 4 yrs. A Wozza 94.5/100 (4.1/5.0) from me.
"

Rather interestingly, my first few sips took me back to the first few bottles of the Jones Block 12 I had in 2015. Reinforcing my initial view of how good that wine was on release. This Bin 28 is a good one from a warm vintage. One to savour now, for those that like the balance of primary and secondary flavours on the more primary (less stewed) side. Cheers, Wozza

Stupidity dictated bypassing this winery when we visited Whaihiki island. It won't happen next visit.

A sore lesson to learn my friend.
Man O' is not something to be passed by.
Delicious right side Bordeaux style, with a good 10 ish years cellar potential.
Hope you have a spare hiding in the rack for future enjoyment.

Though, you could pass by the inserted 'h' in Waiheke. (Wh is an 'F' sound in Maori)..
Truly Forgiven though, maybe the Wh refers to Whukin' good drop
:-)
Bit jealous I am.

Not sure how I got that wrong with it spelt clearly on the label . It was a one off purchase but our bottle shop stocks the high end stuff. I'll drop in this afternoon to grab another.

Edit:Fixed the spelling

I'm grateful for your lesson! Taking the family for a quick break in AKL between Christmas and NY so I'll definitely stop in

2014 Knappstein The Insider riesling from The Den is a delicious drop. Not your average Clare acid bath, this has minerality and length. I like it.

I actually have a friend (who lives on Waiheke) flying over tomorrow night to visit us on the weekend (before doing some work here in Brisbane next week). Should I get him to bring over a bottle or two...??

Edit: Contacted him, I couldn't resist...and my wife will love me for it :D (she loves Bordeaux wines)
