Nice wines I have drunk recently - Red or White

Tried a Serrat Pinot last night - don't know what to think of it. I only bought one to see whether it is something to get more of, I guess the fact I am undecided is reason enough not to. For me it was neither strawberries n cream, light / dark cherry or earthy. It was nice and very very easy to drink but different.

Well, almost 3 weeks later and I can't get this Pinot out of my mind..... so I guess that is reason enough to get more.

I actually have a friend (who lives on Waiheke) flying over tomorrow night to visit us on the weekend (before doing some work here in Brisbane next week). Should I get him to bring over a bottle or two...??

Edit: Contacted him, I couldn't resist...and my wife will love me for it :D (she loves Bordeaux wines)

Since you missed out, I presume you contacted the Australian distributor and found some stock:

I picked up the twins from my local wine emporium. Let me know if you run out. There's two left but unless your specifically chasing them you won't know where to look.ImageUploadedByAustFreqFly1480580801.925526.jpg

Edit: This time I'll use the decanter

Enjoyed a vasse 'filius' cab sav tonight. It opened up after a brief decant. Also cracked a fox creek fox and hound Shiraz cab merlot afterwards and was ok but not as enjoyable.

Parker Coonawarra Estate 2008 "First Growth" Picked this wine up in a mixed six pack from WineMarket. It cost about $20 which is $90 less than its RRP apparently. Wasn't entirely sure what to expect from this when considering the low price in a mixed pack factor. I was concerned it may have been damaged or have been a poor vintage/example of this wine. I'd also seen a few negative reviews of the 2008, notably on Wine Front and also from a couple of people on this forum.

Decanted for around 30 minutes. Great nose of sweet forest fruits and pleasant animal hide/tobacco aromas. Palate is rich and dense but not heavy or jammy with beautiful sweet blackcurrant and other bramble fruits making way for a touch of spice and retreating fine tannins. Perhaps a little vinegary imperfection noticeable on the finish but I'm splitting hairs here. Very impressed having gone into this not expecting the world. Very pleased that I picked up two of these in mixed six packs. This is drinking really well now in my view. May very well go on for a few more years but I think it may have plateaued and I'm looking forward to getting the next one out soon. I don't do scores but if I did 96/100

Good to hear Warlock. Picked one up in that same WM pack so hopefully mine will be in as good a shape as yours. 2008 was the year I met mrs667, so might hang onto this until the next anniversary comes round.

I tried this at the Coonawarra wine tasting event earlier this year, and it's a great wine.

I also picked up 2 x 6 packs of this from WineMarket, and have tried one bottle from each pack. One bottle was great - just like at the tasting event. The other bottle was not in a good way - fruit stripped back etc. So, in my opinion, the wine (as made) is fine, but there may be some badly stored samples out there that are being offloaded. I believe Wozza had a simillar experience with his WM purchase.

First Christmas party for the season last night at ESP in Melbourne. This was the line up. Unfortunately the Run Rig was corked. We still managed to enjoy ourselves though.

Almost 11 months since my last one of these, and it is my last. Drinking quite nice but not as good as the '14 when I tasted it at the CD in June.

Edit: it developed in the right direction as the night went on, I probably should have decanted it I guess.

Tricky to find wine to have with Vietnamese food...this hit the spot - blend of Sangiovese, Vermentino and some other S - yum when not too chilled, dryish with full flavour, serious wine not fluff...YUM

We are back in the US so I can test some reds while I am here as I am the second choice car driver. You probably know I like Cullens Diana and Penfolds 707 pre price rise. So far I am ok with Silver Oak and will continue looking for equivalents. My taste buds are ready.

Keen to hear how the 2010 Napa valley Silver Oak is drinking (and the '08 Alexandria SO)

After a few Pyramid Valley Chardonnays (Lions tooth and Bay of Fires - LT was the best, BoF excellent but Chablis style) and some reds, had this for dessert at Aria in BNE tonight. Was very good.

The last Tuesday of the month (November) blind wine tasting.
Three quality chardonnays. The Ata Rangi my preference for it's clean intensity, minerality and length.

The second bracket. A very moreish 2009 Irvine Grand Merlot (better than the 2006 IMHO), a big and (too) young shiraz and a beautifully balanced Pinot that kept on giving.

And afterwards the Dalwhinnie Cabernet 2002 exceptional, a very old vine Grenacha Tintorera and a fortified 2002 shiraz winding out at 18.5%!

Best's gentle blend 2016. A lovely blend of riesling, gris, gewurtz and muscat. More riesling than the others but much softer than straight riesling as the name suggests. Followed by Crawford river young vines riesling 2015. One of the best we make in Australia.

Tried a Jackson Estate Cabernet and it was really very good. I just had what they called a big pour glass for $27.75 US at Flemings Steakhouse. Lucky I had the Costco 20% off gift cards in my pocket so we each had great meals.

I was lucky to have this to myself at my work Christmas dinner last night - a very reliable Tassie Pinot and always something special from my experience

Tonight sees me trying my first Serrat SV, very happy to have some more laying down for later

A few standout wines from a recent tasting event I was lucky enough to snag an invitation to. The wines tasted included:

1998 Mount William Blanc de Blancs
1996 Stefano Lubiana Late Disgorged
2009 Tyrrells Vat 1 Semillon
1994 Faiveley Aloxe Corton 1er Cru
2008 Buisson Charles Meursault
2012 Aminus Pinot Syrah
2012 Reveur Pinot Noir
2009 Domaine A Pinot Noir
2005 Diamond Valley Reserve Pinot Noir
2009 Sangreal by Farr Pinot Noir
2008 Dry River Pinot Noir
2013 Farnese Edizione
2015 Giant Steps Sexton Pinot Noir

The 2009 Sangreal by Farr Pinot Noir was the unanimous (at least I think it was unanimous) wine of the night. For me white wine of the night was the 1994 Faiveley Aloxe Corton 1er Cru, a simply stunning wine. A real education for me.
