Nice wines I have drunk recently - Red or White

Nigel Dolan, a great winemaker, probably made this one. I had the same 2004 Cab and a 2003 Shiraz on grand Final day in October and have to concur with your tasting notes. I reckon it was my penultimate bott as well. My lousy tasting notes only had 'Nice and smooth, much mellower than last time, overshadowed by the Shiraz".

The 2003 Mamre shiraz was beautiful and retained its spice, flavour, colour, and oaky nose. That certainly surprised the hell out of me, something to do with acidity and longevity? Dunno.

Totally agree with the observation of development thru the ages and the effects on a good wine. Nothing worse than tipping them down the sink.

Spot on beefarmer! Nigel Dolan it was. I bought the 2004 shiraz at the same time. Was a good wine but I didn't try and keep it as long (in fact it went long ago).

They say looks can be deceiving and Friday night showed this to be the point. At a magnum dinner for our local wine group I took along an auction purchase that had me both excited given the vintage and nervous given the lack of providence and state of the bottle. A 1976 Redman Cabernet Sauvignon was opened without decanting and poured straight into glasses. The cork snapped 2/3rds down but managed to get the remains out without losing any to the bottle. On pouring the aroma of rich fruit was still evident surprisingly and on the palate there was tobacco and blackberry characteristics. This was a great vintage based on what the Redman's told me and I would love to get my hands on another bottle (or magnum).

This one goes into the 'interesting' category.

Probably would have been better drunk young. As you can see, the colour is not very appealing - although that's partly a consequence of the trendy coarse filtration/no fining. Only a very small amount of sediment had formed, so I don't think the colour was totally stripped out. That's the way is was and is.

It was very acidic and did have that typical Martinborough earthy/woody/charry backbeat with a fairly long finish.

It actually went quite well with some rather spiced-up spag bol.

One of the highlights of the year in booze, 6er almost gone...

Adelina Shz Mat 14 from Clare Valley - Col is such a talented winemaker across his 3 brands, not in to rating, either a :) or  for me, definitely the former

Split is slightly in Shiraz's favour - on the savoury side, old vine/old wood in Wendouree vicinity, opens up markedly during the eve if i don't smash it, went down a treat with My Bloody Valentine "Loveless" at volume

I kind of liked the adelina polish Hill river riesling but I like MBV more. Saw them in Bristol in 1989... nearly deafened me.

The PH Riesling has been getting rave reviews, must purchase some...saw them at the Palace, You Made Me Realise the ultimate final song

Kohen, love the decanter! You should be able to titrate yourself admirably with that:D
