Nice wines I have drunk recently - Red or White

A couple of bottles last night with the regular crew of four, served blind as usual.

WOTN was a tricky choice.....Signature 08 absolutely singing and a step up from the 05, the 02 Darkie totally belying it's age and the 04 St Peter for the divine nose and elegance.

A late entry last night for OTWN - 2007 Apollonia Vale Cupa Salento served with a slow-cooked Beef Ragu and Fettucine. The wine is a 50/50 Primitivo and Negraoamaro from Puglia, under cork. 12 months in oak and 15% alc. Was worried this bottle was getting on in age, but ultimately I need not have. A big wine that had a very earthy mushroom nose, with a hint of sour cherry on the palate that was definitely in a supporting role to the savoury, secondary characteristics on display, i.e. meaty, leathery and mushroom flavours with a sage herbal note.

No alcohol heat either, just a very well made wine. I'd give it a straight 4 on vivino - it's probably plateaued in terms of development, but would hold another 2 years with these flavours. Really good match with the food - a case of making the food to match the wine!

We were staying at the in-laws over the weekend whilst they were out of town, and my father-in-law messaged to say we were welcome to pull something out of the wine fridge to drink. Oh, the temptation!

We were good and had an 09 Bowen Estate CS in the end...

Started off Saturday night with one of my last few Pimpernel Pinot. For a 2010 it still drinking well which allayed my fears that it may have been passed it's drinking age.

Then I was a little cheeky and I raided the wine fridge for a 2012 RWT - which I had laid aside to drink at a much later stage.

A magnificently smooth wine! Very dark purple in color - was like a mouth full of ink and dark berries and plum; it was an amazing wine to drink and I don't think I can do justice to it as I'm not a great wordsmith like some of you who describe wine is such tantalizing detail.

I was very blessed to savour a mint condition Petaluma Coonawarra 1998 over the last few days.

A massive recommendation from me if you have the opportunity to try this legendary Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot wine.

It's actually still for sale through Dans ($94.99) and a few other places:

My tasting notes and thoughts on the wine are here for those that are interested:

Finally got to try a bottle of the 2013 Warrabilla Parola's Limited Release Durif gifted to me (amongst other bottles) by an über-generous fellow AFFer and I must confess I've been a bit nervous about the 17.5% rating on this "behemoth "! Wow, double-wow, this wine is worth diving in head-first and jettisoning any preconceptions you may have...I've jotted down a few observations as they unfolded after the first glass (wasn't game to consume this mammoth beast over any less than three nights):
Appearance: Viscous, clinging, the oft-abused term 'brooding' comes to mind, all nigh impenetrable in its inky lagoon-like depths, paradoxically it bleeds to dark carmine at the juncture with glass.
Nose: The alcohol-warmth rises from the glass and opens up the olfactory senses in much the same way as a brandy balloon full of Hennessy, blackberries, actually blackberry jam of the most refined home-style manufacture infiltrates the nasal cavities, I could blow over the limit just smelling this stuff! Sweet estery goodness washes over in waves, I am struggling to identify the components and I know this will be divisive but there is something reminiscent of hydraulic fluid, fleeting and not at all a negative.
Palate: There is something of the deep-sea diver descending through the stratification of plums, vanilla bean paste, blackberry compote, immense-but softly so, the classic iron fist in the velvet glove, like a large iron bolt only made of tobacco and treacle that's had the corners rounded off, astonishing....

Last Tuesday of the Month's Blind Wine Tasting.
Two themes eventually unfolded.

First bracket, 2009 Pinot Noir.

2009 Paringa Estate Pinot Noir
IMG_4992.jpg
Meaty!

2009 Ata Rangi Pinot Noir
IMG_4994.jpgIMG_4995.jpg
Much paler in colour, more elegant, excellent length.

2009 Savigny Les Beaune

Benjamin Leroux is a maverick "young gun" worth seeking out. Decanted 6 hours prior to tasting! Stelvin closure, in France! Extremely floral and expressive of terroir. Very fine grain tannins.

Second bracket, 2004 Cabernet dominant blends.

2004 Chateau Gruaud Larose
IMG_5005.jpg
Left Bank Bordeaux (as opposed to Merlot dominant Right Bank). Savoury, expressive fruit and tannic!

2004 Cignale

Super Tuscan. An excellent IGT wine, at half the price of a Sassicaia

Ripe and luscious from an excellent vintage.

Absolutely Sedimental! I'm a lover of wines writ large and this Durif although formidable is also approachable, just joined Warrabilla's mailing list a couple of weeks ago and am looking forward to receiving a 1/2 dozen of their best some time soon...

Congratulations Whining and dining; you found what we all hope to find in a new wine that "WOW" factor and even rarer "double WOW". Warrabilla's Perolas Durif and Shiraz are definitely well produced wines. The hunt for the next "WOW" wine begins; Cheers.

Very happy in the meantime Rug! ;)

Down to the last couple of bottles of the quintessential summer slurper

Full bodied Rose from Noons, 13.8% sits about right, love this, pity can't get anymore

I started with this (picked up in a mixed case a few years ago), decanted for 2 hours, horrible bitter and acidic

So I have moved onto a '12 Maverick Twins GSM - lovely :)
