Nice wines I have drunk recently - Red or White

Our second virtual tasting by Zoom tonight. Another blast.

This time I made sure peeps put their bottle in front of their face so I didn't have to blot faces out. Monty didn't count...

My WOTN ;) was the Stagnari Viejo 2016 Tannat that I dragged back from Uruguay about this time last year: Tannat Viejo – H. Stagnari. Texturally as smooth as silk; tannic grip like a rabbit trap.

At least @Daver6 didn't bring a Jura wine tonight...😜.

The overall vote for most interesting (sounding) wine went to the white at far left, middle row. A Greek wine that is a blend of three varieties. Available locally and not far from my place, so I'm off to buy a bottle tomorrow.

Who is that lightweight on the bottom left. How much has he had?

Mrs@Daver6 had been sharing that window with Monty until shortly before that screen grab. Also, we'd had a few more aboard earlier, including a member who had moved to Victoria. It's something like that which makes the virtual tasting even more special.

I reckon you would have been safe decanting those Barolos in the morning and would be opening up nicely come dinner time.

I just stood up a 1982 Produttori del Barbaresco in the cellar for next Friday night. I'll take the decanting approach mentioned above for this too.

Bottle open. Cork in good condition for the age. Decanted. Very closed. Still huge tannins. Look that colour though! Waiting game sucks...

Inspired by the professional tasting @Daver6 did recently:

I’ve done my own little amateurish tasting at home.

First I must say FG Parterre is one of the best value for money Cab Savs I had. All 3 vintages were smooth and pleasure to drink but if need to chose then 13’ > 15’ > 12’

Nose very closed on opening. Decanted for six hours. Ahh....that's much better. Still going strong after eight hours in the decanter. Rose petal, mushroom, balsamic and hints of sweet fruits. Tannins galore with good acid to match. Long finish. Very happy with this wine.

If one didn't know what they were doing with old Neb and just consumed this on opening, it would have been super disappointing. They really need a lot of air time.

I'll just have to take your word for it...

Hi Daver6 - I don't really know what I am doing with Neb, so have a dumb question. I have a 2009 I'll be opening next weekend (I know enough to know that is criminally young, but I'll be opening anyway), is it likely to need 6+ hours as well, or is it that older Nebs need more time? I bought from a decent retailer and they suggested only an hour decant...

What's the specific wine?

I always also look on CellarTracker to get a bit of guidance from what other people have done recently. The other thing you can do is open it early and pour a little into a glass and assess. If its singing then just put the cork back in/screw cap back on.

Thanks @Da

The wine is:
2009 Giuseppe E Figlio Mascarello Barolo Santo Stefano di Perno, Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo - CellarTracker

Hopefully that link will work. It doesn't seem like people are decanting, or at least not mentioning it much on CT. Good call on opening early - think I'll try that approach!

I encourage you to do as we are doing and buy direct from the winery. Might cost you a bit more than from the discounters but it will keep them alive.

I don't really need any more but ordered another dozen directly from a winery today

Thanks @Da

Apologies for the delay. I consulted with a friend who is the oracle on all things from the Piedmont region. His comments are that 2009 was an average and quite warm vintage. However this is an elegant Barolo and not as affected as others. His recommendation would be to pop and pour and enjoy over a few hours.
