Nice wines I have drunk recently - Red or White

Nice! But damn, I have a bunch of the 2017 and I don't really want to wait til 2030!!
Dont panic yet, I have 2007 and 2008 I'm yet to look at!

When this wine is regularly on for $15 or much less it's easy to stock up and worry about when to drink it much later.

You are not helping! I paid $150ish for the six pack of 2017s that included a 2016 black. All you're saying is I paid too much and now need to wait too long! Moan.

Some of us missed out on that! I wouldn't mind a couple of bottles of black to try.
Rotten luck. The deal was on for a long time. Many on the forum got it for even cheaper due to a glitch. But don't worry, apparently both black and grey are often discounted, and many say overrated/not great value!

purchased these on release , was very looking forward to taste these in 10 years time, here it is.

mark tree has a light red fragrant, med bodied at best, not a sweet wine at all, still has a hint of pepper and a bit of leather that fades away right at the end.

reserve 08,pepper and vanilla oak, cherries and dark berries, more depth than the mark tree, dry tannins and long finish, lovely to drink now will keep the last bottle for another 10 years.

the 09 seems to be the better vintage in Canberra, but I can tasted more oak in this over the 08, dark fruit , plums, sweet fruits, taste quite young.
At half of clonakilla Syrah cost, these performs really well.

Tonight I sampled a brand new Dans import - a "cheapie" - a 100% Mourvedre varietal from Spain. (aka Mataro or Monastrell)

This is the La Purisima "Consentido'. 2017. Imported via Pinnacle drinks - thus not a fine wine.

Due to visitors have not the time for a lengthy discourse, but it is a nice ruby in colour, cherry on the nose and palate, quite a bold yet smooth tipple. And a decent finish.

At $12 a bottle, in my opinion punches well above its weight in this economical price range. Nice bordeaux bottle and punt. And equally nice to sample a pure varietal expression that is different from the usual offerrings.

Comes from the SE of Spain - an area that is about 500m above sea level, and relatively flat. About 40 km NW of Alicante, and 40 km SW of Valencia. They grow this without trellises. Humble in style. The producer is proud to make wines that are "simple". Nothing fancy, but pure and easy drinking.

This is an easy drinking wine, but it packs sufficient body to also make it meekly formidable, if that is a term?

In my total assessment, it is something that is worthwhile trying, as a different red. Great value for money. And something you should try, before moving on to the other ten thousand products we are indulged in sampling....

Edit: the name "Consentido", means "spoilt" I think it is a nice name, but the product would be up to the name only if you rejoice in economical wines.

It seems to be an $11 shirah or Cabernet or Mouvedere depending on the bottle? Post a label.

$11 ?? Times are tough in lockdown!

”Consentido” can also mean “indulgent“.

I cannot right now post a photo - tech issues. but trust me, it is 100% mouvedre/mataro/monastrell.

I was in at work (Dans) today, not because I was working, but was in the area and killing time, so I ventured in. This product leapt out at me because it is brand new. It is not shiraz, it is not cabernet. It is Mataro.
Consentido means "spoilt" I have lived half my life in spanish speaking countries...

¡Eso puede ser consentido!

  • chardonnay: preferred the 2017 Bay of Fires
  • pinot noir: it's taken until my penultimate bottle of Oakridge Willowlake to find it as enjoyable the Punt Road, my 2015 (budget) benchmark
  • grenache: 2019 Tonic definitely needs time - even on its third-fourth/final day, I perhaps didn't like it as much as the 2015 Purple Hands, which didn't last that long
  • malbec: best on its third-fourth/final day, though still not sure if it's a variety for me, i rarely buy/drink them

Pretty happy with this recent purchase. Only $70 and recently recorked at the Chateau

recently recorked? why? do they do that often? never heard of it happening much, except for clinics likes Penfolds/Henschke, but presumably you didn't take your own bottle back to the Chateau?

I grabbed some of that guy - how long would you give it before it's prime? I was thinking quite a long time - like 2025!

2025 is definitely not a long time, more like short to medium term

interestingly, Marc Malouf gave similar scores to JO, including his first ever 10/10 or 100pts to the Dardel, which 2018 Giaconda Chardonnay also received a few months later

I cannot read the top one to compare but I would not disagree with Angus's description - cannot see when he tasted? I am sure it will improve with bottle age but I find it so good now....

to read afr.com, just stop pages from fully loading:

The latest vintage of Alto is a pinot for hedonists. Succulent black cherries and redcurrants tumble out of the glass and into your mouth, followed by a flood of fine savoury tannins that flows across the tongue.

Something different for a sunny Saturday - smashable skin contact Yetti and Kokonut Savagnin.

snap somewhat:

  • my first Muddy Water ($28 @ Camberwell Cellars) and perhaps one of my first skin fermented wines - not smashable for me (no wine is, beer maybe), preferred it a few days later
  • had the Collector previously whilst out for dinner last year - still good, but nevertheless think that other sangiovese such as Coriole are better

didn’t try their Sangiovese back then, not my thing, if you like it from that region you can also try ravensworth as well.

That tonic Grenache should be a early drinker, very fragrant and juicy from the first 2 vintages.sounds like it’s a serious wine now.

I cracked open their 2019 Mataro. Wouldnt call it an easy drinking wine but drinks wonderfully this young.

That's interesting, I didn't really like it on the third night as it felt like the perfume and aromas had been lost. However, maybe it comes down to not storing it as well, didn't quite follow the half bottle hack.
