Nice wines I have drunk recently - Red or White

Re: Nice Wines I have DranK Recently - Red or White

Enjoying tonight a Rockford 2009 Moppa Springs GSM with a big fat steak. The wine is earthy and smooth as a baby's bottom with that typical Shiraz finish on the palate. Perfect when you don't want a big straight Shiraz. And the steak on the Weber Q cooked perfectly.

uh .. it lives..

I'm finishing off a mof_ special.. Capercaille _the Ghillie 07.. sadly just ok… ( and I had great hopes)

In the US, I drank a few bottles of a luuuurvly Petit Sirah ( Durif) from a little Organic farm just North of SF.
It was sold in a local BiRite supermarket .. about $30us..and I really wanted to bring some home

Tried the Wirra Wirra RSW Shiraz 2008. Very nice drop. A powerful but smooth shiraz.

......and the steak

Steak looks brilliant. We just had a couple of lobster tails with an O'Leary Walker 2007 Watervale Riesling. Turning a wonderful golden colour and mellowing beautifully.

Re: Nice Wines I have DranK Recently - Red or White

By demand from Buzz. Cracked a bottle of Rockford Black Shiraz tonight. I have a long standing stalker like relationship with this wine. It is very hard for mere mortals to get hold of it. My first try was at a work Christmas do with a work mate who was/is a stonewall room member of Rockfords. We actually had 2 Stonewall members at work, the other one had his house featured in magazines like SA Life. Black Shiraz is very much an South Australian secret.

Since then I have tried to enjoy Black Shiraz whenever I visit a few select restaurants that have it by the bottle. That was until a Stonewaller on AFF generously arranged a visit and opened up his allowance.

So tonight it, with mum visiting, I decided it was time to open a Black Shiraz. We were supposed to be seeing The Stones tonight but unfortunately that wasn't to be.

Anyway, it is a non vintage wine from this years production. Seasoned in oak, but a sparkling Shiraz. Initially I thought it might have been a bit corked bit that must have been the oak. The bottle benefited from a bit of breathing. I'm a long term fan of Black Shiraz and I'm still a fan after this bottle.

We followed through with a bottle of the Rockford Basket Press Shiraz 2004 that had been hanging around in my "cellar". Like the Black Shiraz I don't think it is possible to go wrong with this wine. Maybe except if it is still juvenile, pre-pubescent wine.

If you see a wine list and recognise nothing except Rockford Black Shiraz or Basket Press Shiraz - buy either.

Slightly OT - more along the lines of "nice wines I would like to drink":

I have three years until a rather special occasion. I would like some stickies and want to make sure I get a good one laid down in time. A friend of mine works in a restaurant and has suggested the owner may be willing to part with some that have been languishing in the cellar for a while. They have been stored at about 8-10° since purchase. Any thoughts?

The Brown Brothers is past, best 2007 or so. Pity, its my favorite sticky.

Re: Nice Wines I have DranK Recently - Red or White

Ok, thanks. 1 down, 3 to go.

Huon Hooke gives the 2003 Margan a lot of accolades as the best sticky tasted in a long while, but only gives it three years to cellar.

Miranda approaching 30 years would be a worry for me. I would buy some De Bortoli Noble One now and keep it for 3 years. Maybe even some Rockford Cane Cut Semillon (2006 out now) and wait another 3 years. Must open my 1998 Noble One and report back

Noble One was to be the choice, but I thought I had better check what I have been offered in case one of them stood out. So far it seems not to be.

Does the restaurant have more than one of each? If so, buy and try. That should tell you whether they will see out another three years or not.

Otherwise, Dan's tend to have Noble One on their Langtons wall. Might be an option if you want something older. Alternatively consider something from Sauternes or Barsac. Maybe even some German Riesling. Thinking Auselese or TBAs here.

Surprising wine, Woodlands 'Chloe' Chardonnay 2010, I had not heard of it but, a bottle was given to me by the CSM on a MASA flight from ASP to SYD. Had great oak, nice buttery finish similar quality to Leeuwin estate 'Art Series' Chardonnay. Definitely worth a look.
