Nice wines I have drunk recently - Red or White

Hope no-one is accidentally using the wrong "wine tool".. Hate to think you were unintentionally using your "New World Shiraz" glass for your Old World Syrah... :pDSC_0096.jpg

By the way.. the champagne glasses are massive.. could maybe guzzle a pinot from them lol

Looks all very indulgent but very red... no whites or bubbles Blackcat20? Hope Tom was good on the push bike :p

A few bubbles, Rieslings and roses. But mostly we stuck to the reds. There are only so many wines you can drink in a day (especially when it involves 5 wineries each day).

Tonight I had the second half of this bottle from my Argentina Malbec 6-pack (see upthread). This is the (only) one from Neuquen in N Patagonia. All the others are from Mendoza.

Price: $23. Can't expect too much.

Verdict: Pretty B* good on the price-point weighted scale.

Was is a screaming example of Arg Malbec?: of course not!

Did it capture some of the essence of Arg Malbec and differentiate from Australian versions?: yes.

Is it a good BBQ wine that your mates might say: "That's a bit different; what is it?": IMHO: yes.

Did it seem to be a little different than Mendoza Malbec?: yes. My analogy would be how (generally) Martinborough Pinot Noir differs from Central Otago Pinot Noir. It was just a tad more bold and a little less plush - but it still had the softness of tannins and the subtle fruitiness that differentiates Arg Malbec from the much more fruit-forward Australian versions (which by-and-large fail to differentiate themselves from other big Australian reds - and wherein lies their problem IMHO.)

One down, five to go - but off to a good start.

Ok.. maybe I was a bit harsh earlier.. (the "caution" just threw me.. seriously :p.. I generally expect cautions to be about dishwashers or other wine glass (sorry wine "tool") threatening equipment..).. The glass really did show off the champagne and highlight the nose. The stem was extremely delicate and the rim pleasant on one's lips... The key is to pour just the right amount in to really enjoy the champagne and the glass :)

I saw something recently (can't remember where - maybe Tyson Steltzer's Champagne book) where the idea of using wider-bowled, tall glasses instead of tall narrow flutes for Champagne was championed.

It is in Tyson's book. Was also pushed heavily when we were in champagne earlier in the year. For my nose, I find the effect marginal for the NV's, but it does make a difference for the prestige cuvées.

Where: Lalla Rookh restaurant, St Georges Terrace, Perth
Who: JohnM, QF WP, Steady & Jukebox333
When: Wed 21/1
What we drank:

Marchand & Burch Mt Barrow Pinot Noir 2013 ($80) & Cape Mentelle Wilyabrup Cabernet Merlot 2012 ($85)
ImageUploadedByAustFreqFly1421928516.666920.jpg

SC Pannell Syrah 2013 ($70) - but we paid $55

In hindsight, had we realised that we were able to drink 3 bottles between us, we would have drunk the SC Pannell Syrah second, rather than last.

We all thought they were well matched to the 6 course meal (ignoring the dessert). Again, we mused about whether to have a dessert wine but I think we were full enough.

Beautiful well rounded

Pffft - just the usual mid-week scraps over here in PER QF WP ;):cool::p.

The Mt Barrow was $80 ($50 at the Burch Family Wines - aka Howard Park - cellar door, so the Lalla Rookh markup, to their credit, is not outrageous). (BTW, The other M&B Pinot to look out for is the Gibraltar Rock). The Wilyabrup is a Bordeaux blend: Cab Sav, Merlot, Cab Franc and, while the Pannell Syrah was on the wine list at $70, I think it ended up being $55 on the invoice. All good value IMHO.

Given the 'Il Capo' 6-course menu was $58/person, I think the all-up value was pretty b* good given PER's reputation as the food and drink gouge capital of the world - and Lalla Rookh is in the CBD.

You're dead right about the fact that we should have ordered the three bottles up-front and rattled through them: Pinot/Syrah/Bord blend. So much for the 'host' trying to be polite and moderate in the face of overwhelming odds :):p. Ah well - we now know what to do next time ;).

Hmmm, the rest of my critique has disappeared (after beautiful well rounded - and I wasn't talking about our servers' posterior) ???

I agree, there will be a next time - maybe we can get UpInTheAir:) or Princess Fiona with us for some female company.

In that case we would have to triple the 'triple-pack':);):):p:mrgreen:. Let's just see if us male wimps can keep up with some truly serious intent ;).
