Nice wines I have drunk recently - Red or White

I'm puzzled why folks have trouble getting an upright image using an iPad, which happens fairly often on this thread and the 'View from my 'office'' thread, so I did some testing with mine.

The images below are taken starting with the iPad upright in portrait mode (ie. with the home button at the bottom). I then turned it top to the right successively 90 degrees for the next three images.

The only one that posts correctly is the last one - which is equivalent to turning the top of the iPad 90 degrees to the left from the upright starting point. In other words, this position has the iPad in landscape mode with the home button on the right and the camera lens in the top left corner relative to the operator.

Oh dear. I'm surprised that a man of your worldliness didn't think of the flaw in that test.

You were more-or-less vertical when you took the pictures, right? Turning the iPad? I suspect that many pictures posted in this thread at least have the picture taker non vertical  .

Have a nice bottle (or two) of nice Argentinean Malbec and try the test again :) .

Ah yes I know this but am just lazy at times and the photos are taken not exclusively for AFF. Plus when I come to post the image I've drunk all the bottle. :)

Technically, the AFF forum software upload function should be updated to respect the EXIF orientation field.

Kept this bottle long enough, it was about time to open it. Mature complex wine with deep plum, cherry and chocolate flavours.
The best Australian Sangiovese I had so far.

I was fortunate to be able to try a lot of wines at an Australia Day party I went to. Thankfully the event was held on Sunday leaving Monday for recovery.
Below are just a few that I tried.
I shall leave it to you to work out what originated in my cellar.
(Seems I can't insert photos so will try another post)

The photos for the post above
There are more but I'm limited to 5 photos

Just to show JohnM that all his empty DOM bottles were not in vain.

OK - I had the first half of the second of my Argentinian Malbec 6-pack tonight (see upthread.)

2ndmalbec.JPG

The 6-pack price was $140 delivered free in Aus. so average $23/bottle. This one shows as $35/bottle single price on the importer's website, so obviously one of the more expensive in the 6-pack. The first one I opened (upthread) was the only one from Neuquen (so that's why it was first to die) at spot-on the average price.

Why did I choose to open this one second? Only because it was the oldest (2011) of the remaining 5. Note it's from the Valle de Ucco, the higher-elevation region S of Mendoza (see my TR below).

The verdict: pretty B* good. It certainly exhibited the prized characteristic of gorgeously soft tannins that only Argentinian Malbec can achieve. Maybe didn't hit the wow factor - but, hey, at <$35 whichever way you like to calculate the price, what can one expect - but it certainly had the yum factor. (You can rely on JohnM for erudite wine descriptors :shock::cool::oops::p.)

So far, so good with the 6-pack. I am getting the feeling that the folks behind this import outfit really know what they're doing.

If this trend continues for the remaining four, I'll be in like Flynn with another order - of the 12-pack.

Look forward JohnM to your report on the final 4.

Edit to add:
Have you tried the Bleasdale (Langhorne Creek) Malbec?

Certainly have. Langhorne Creek is regarded as the historical - and current - epicentre of Malbec in Australia, with Bleasdale being the preeminent producer. It's also a very historic winery well worth a visit from that perspective alone if you haven't been there.

While the Malbecs they produce are great and technically well-made, IME they are pretty big fruit bombs that - to me at least - don't result in something differentiated enough to make me keep wanting to buy them. There's not the wow or yum factor to me. They have quite an extensive range (about 6) of varietal Malbecs.

Another producer in Langhorne Creek is Bremerton and they did a Malbec about 2009 IIRC that was a cracker, reminding me of the Argentinian style. The next year's vintage was not a patch on it, so I put it down to stars aligning the previous year (although that's only a sample of two years, so not really objective). It's only $24/bottle in their current offering.

Langhorne Creek is not your typical tourist-trail wine area and is quite small. Still, it's interesting to visit. Bremerton have a nice cafe/restaurant.

Lake Breeze is another well-regarded producer there, although I don't think they do Malbec. I note that QF was serving Lake Breeze Vermentino in DOM J in early December for a nice alternative. It was a newy for the FA - but I filled her in on it...:).
