Nice wines I have drunk recently - Red or White

I used to use that - then I realised I hardly ever ticked off the bottles that were consumed. Now its the 'I wonder what's in that carton' inventory method.

I used to have a cellar book but really didn't keep it up to date.
So now it is the patented method of walking into the cellar thinking what needs to be consumed soon.

I use a similar method to RooFlyer. Open the wine fridge, move some wine around on different shelves and select something that piques my interest

I have a print-out that I tick off wines on and just periodically update Winebase.

I find it useful to keep tabs on the location of bottles in two large wine cabinets where some shelves are a bit over-full or have larger bottles squeezed in, making some shelves a bit sticky to pull out and push in. I've numbered each cabinet and the shelves within each and each wine has a cabinet/shelf location code. Also, that way, when I add some bottles I can just poke them into any gaps.

In other words, there's no structure to where the wines are in the cabinets; the structure comes entirely from the Winebase record.

Like Rooflyer and Drron, I used to keep a record years ago and I remember using WinBase on windows 3.1. It is very good if you wish to spend time on the computer rather than drinking. Nowadays I follow the methods recommended above to just rumble around until I find something that calls out that it needs drinking. Or pick the one closest to the door or on a random shelf in the WF.

Which reminds me that it's time to dig out a bottle of Pinot for tonight!

Given so many on this forum have impressive collections of wine, I was wondering what software or apps people use to track their cellar.

I'm about to get more serious with storing my wine and have put together a basic Access database, but it's not very aesthetically pleasing. I'm open to suggestions of what I should use.

I use the Cellar app. Pretty darn good. I have 2 wine fridges plus a wine rack so I need to keep everything sorted out...

After a little interlude, I'm back on thread.

As noted upthread, I had pulled a bottle of Pinot Noir out of the cabinet earlier today and was preparing dinner when PartnerJohnM dropped in. So, a few pre-dinner whites later (the Mitolo Vermentino [McLaren Vale] was a very nice aperitif), she ends up staying for dinner and the Pinot is opened.

Verdict from both of us: F* awesome! Note the real information on the label.

It was the last of three different N Patagonia Pinots from Familia Schroeder at Neuquen that I brought back from Argentina in my luggage a few years back. This one was the standout.

Really hard to describe. Subtle nose, not really easily or immediately recognisable as Pinot Noir as we conventionally think of PN (from nose or palate). Good colour and body, ultra-smooth tannins. Subtle, yet expressive. Just absolutely unique! I reckon it would really throw the cat among the pigeons at a blind tasting!

It turned out to be a very good night ;):).

I'm amazed at how many Australians don't know about the vast wine field called 'south eastern australia'. Most wine (not all) bought in the UK is marked as a product of that region, it is an internationally protected name, similar to champagne.

Nearly all wines from "South East Australia" can be had for under $10.
So the Brits go for the cheapies.

Not only cheap, brought over in bulk containers via ship, bottled in the uk to save costs and then also given imaginary grower names.

But even some well known brands use that label too.

Hands down the best option is CellarTracker - Wine Reviews & Cellar Management Tools. Not only is it free, you can see reviews of others on wine you have. Takes a bit of time to input your inventory, but you can import data from Excel sheets. There are also Android and iPhone apps as device based front ends.
