Nice wines I have drunk recently - Red or White

Opened one of the DM Secret Pinots and I agree with Princess Fiona.. certainly improves with time to breathe. Last night I found it a bit green but today it is smooth, fruity and delicious. Earthier than I would have expected for a NZ Pinot but I like a bit of dirt in my Pinot :)
Giving it a very good and certainly worth the $25 a bottle price.

That's good value for $25. I must check out the secret deals it seems.

Some of the CO Pinots we drink are quite green when you open them because they use increasing amounts of whole bunch and stems in the ferment. Seems an increasing trend in CO, especially for the single vineyard and more expensive pinots but it gives them depth and spice. IMHO wines made with this method need quite a while to breathe to soften the harsh green tannins. Decant and leave for an hour or more. (Open a white while waiting!)

I received a very kind PM from carwashair (funny handle , lovely person :)):

[I recall a wine thread where you lamented the scarcity of norton riserva malbec. Well, I saw some at Vintage cellars pyrmont last week on a good deal - 2009 vintage for$32 each in a six bottle buy. Even better though is it was a buy 2 get 1 free clearance. So 6 bottles for $128. Hope this helps, feel free to repost once you get to take advantage of it :).]

It turns out that cwh meant Norton Privada, which is what it was. It seems VC Ultimo was clearing stock that wasn't available online (Riserva and the base-level are available online at about $16 and $9/bottle, respectively, but I wouldn't bother with those having already tried the Riserva.) Anyway, the upshot is that for $23 freight, the 6-pack is now on its way to me.

Thanks cwh :).

Just a heads-up. Don't bother to enter this Penfolds competetion since it's all mine!

WIN a Rolex with Penfolds

I see this in the T&C's

During the Competition Period, entrants must:

  1. purchase, in 1 transaction, 2 x 750ml bottles of wine from the Penfolds collection (either Bins, Luxury or Icon series) (Eligible Purchase) for off premise consumption from any participating independent liquor outlet or participating online liquor store (excluding Dan Murphy’s, BWS, Liquorland, Vintage Cellars and 1st Choice);

Yes, no "discount" stores. But you can buy from Qantas Epicure and others. I buy from Treasury Wine Estates (TWE Vintrepreneur's Club) which is cheaper than DMs or at last a match, generally, sometimes...

Another celebration, so had a look in the cellar, and decided to open one of these this time. Was pretty sensational - one of the better RWTs in my opinion:

Have a crazy hankering for red wine at the moment, but promised myself no wine till Friday....dont think I'll make it.

Thought I'd finished the last of these so was pleasantly surprised to find one in the wine fridge. Time for a top up order I think.

Coming on the wine tour in April?
Rockford are putting on something special for us.

I wish I was Buzzard! I followed your thread with much interest but just cannot get the planets to align this time. The Stonewaller room is something special and I would have loved to top up on the SVS Shiraz too. Haven't had much chance to use my Stonewaller benefits at the actual winery itself but getting an allocation of Basket Press each year is a reward in itself. Great job organising it though and I'm sure everyone will have a great time! Looking forward to the trip report.

I don't think Rockford appreciate what they have let themselves in for. Think the imbibing equivalent of a plague of locusts descending on a lettuce patch.

I am definitely going to restock SVS that day!

Given so many on this forum have impressive collections of wine, I was wondering what software or apps people use to track their cellar.

I'm about to get more serious with storing my wine and have put together a basic Access database, but it's not very aesthetically pleasing. I'm open to suggestions of what I should use.
Used to use the original Halliday Wine Companion (on CD), then Cellartracker but recently changed to Winebase when we moved and rebuilt the cellar.
