At least some (slight) good news. Had managed to book 2 x JASA BNE-SYD and SYD-BNE. This was booked on 2 separate 1 way tickets for 2 PAX each - 2 tickets for 2 reasons, the most significant being snagging the Friday cheap JASA while it was available then waiting for the Amex points transfer for the return, but also the ability to cancel the return for full credit (as it is not "partly flown") if required. JASA also for two reasons - the SC, and the ability to refund or change.
Travel was for this Friday, and return on Saturday. Now due to work loads, a change of plan, only 1 PAX, and return same day late at night.
A dummy change attempt online simply converts the JASA to a dollar amount (at a pathetic rate - probably because it was a cheapy at the "classic plus a few points" rate), then offers the full fares. Not looking good.
With the current (hopefully temporary) issues, a replacement JASA (I could just cancel for a refund, and rebook), is going to cost 4x the points (and have no points anyway after booking JASAs - including a 2 pax BNE-HKG return for next year also at "classic plus" cost, before the +++ increases).
A call to QF call centre, on hold a couple of times, and the tickets are split to allow one PAX to be refunded, then some more fiddling "this is a bit more complicated than a commercial fare", and the change is done (I had checked U class was available on the flight I wanted - just the ridiculous online JASA quote). All changed, refund request queued for processing, total cost of change - zero. Well done QF.
Interestingly, whilst fiddling around trying to make the change (before having to put me on hold again), the very friendly agent pointed out that the classic award (with the U availablity) would cost slightly less points and charges. I replied that not only was I interested in the SC earn, but knowing we may need to cancel one, the JASA was fully refundable, whereas there was a point penalty on the classic, so it made sense. Agent fully understood, and was very helpful.
As a mere PS, I don't get the premium desk, but have a feeling I must have called at a quiet time and hit someone who would normally handle those calls.
