I just booked an itinerary ex OZ to/from New York.

On the QF107/QF108 segment I have been (automatically) preallocated in Y+ seating, sold as WHY.

I guess Qantas are not selling Y+ between LAX and JFK.

i have to travel for work to CVG later in the year and was planning to go all the way to JFK on QF107/108 return and then get a AA or Delta flight to CVG. I do hope I get so lucky and get a free J upgrade on the LAX-JFK leg as I will be flying PE on the flight anyway. I can only but dream...

With the multitude of different configs on the 744s now, they wont usually sell Y+ on LAX-JFK (or if they do, you hope they change a/c and you get op-up).

Sept 08 we got 3 class a/c (sitting in 3rd row of Y directly behind lower J cabin).

That makes sense. I just assumed that QF would use 4 class aircraft as often as they can on that segment. I guess with the advent of the A380 this might not occur as much anymore. I always thought they aimed to use ER aircraft on the SYD-LAX or MEL-LAX flights but it appears not. Anyway I can only dream.

I think it's kind-of pot-luck / depends on which a/c they want where (maint req'ts etc.) There were three QF 744s in LAX when we were there, one ER other's "normal" 744s. As best I could tell, we took the ex-MEL plane to JFK (despite 107 being ex-SYD).

I think there's another thread around discussing this (NZ flight changes) and how they would shuttle the 744 eg. BNE-LAX-JFK-LAX-AKL-LAX-MEL etc to get around not flying AKL-MEL any more, and to keep fleet usage comparable.

The qantas press release wouldnt download from their website for me just now.

I think although it's no good being on 737s (albeit they'll be -800s and are getting seatback IFE installed - eventually) across to AKL, but it's certainly a good move to have the AKL-LAX flight arriving to make the JFK connection (both for the pax and for the airline).

Are you sure they will be 800 type 737's as the dummy booking I did for Oct displayed it as being a 737-300 JetConnect flight. I am wary about getting IFE in seat backs and 737-800 on all flights.

I think I should ask serfty to book my tickets so I have a chance of an automatic upgrated to Y+ ;)

Could it be something to do with your WP and 109% LTSG status?

They'll be gradually pahsing out 733s and 734s and replacing the Jetconnect fleet with 738s. Suspect that'll take longer than by october of course!

Covers it all really (hope the link works, if not go to asx.com.au and click on QF and then announcements, it's the last announcement)

The dates were late August.

I have since refined plans and are heading to the USA in very late October rather than August, just in time for my new QFF "Year" to start ;)

The flights for LAX/JFK QF108/QF107 are on three class aircraft this time; so no Y+ seating with WHY service. (At this stage)

Except now QF25 leaves AKL at 1330 which doesn't really suit business people, who cannot do a full days work.

I also query just how many people from NZ are going to NY rather than stopping in LA.

Some have suggested (not in these words though) that it's an attempt by Qantas to pull away from the route.

Wouldn't surprise me at all, based on Qantas just about destroying any loyalty or want to fly them that NZ'ers had.

I am not sure I can agree with that analysis. QF departures to LAX from Australia leave between in the middle of the day also (QF107 @ 10:15am, QF11 @ 1:20pm, QF15 @ 11:05am, QF93 @ 10:15am), none of which allow for a day's work before travel and all of which have very high business traveller loads.

While the NZ flights depart AKL later in the day, they also arrive into LAX later in the day which may be unattractive to business travellers with connections further east. QF tries to deliver passengers into LAX early enough in the day to make good connections eastward, which is quite attractive to many business travellers. They can do a few last minute things on the day they depart NZ and arrive at their final USA destination in time for a shower, dinner and a good night's sleep. Works for me.

Leaves a nice spot open for an afternoon/evening departure for an orange 787.....

I booked QF107 mid July SYDJFK, return QF108 JFKSYD early Aug in WHY and have been allocated 34 A & B - How does one confirm that this is WHY+ as shown in "check my trip" seating.

Serfty, 2x4x2 shown on checkmytrip - hope we don't get bumped out as only QFNB

Well, we've all been bumped out, WP, NB no matter!

Qantas seem have decided to sell Y+ to / from JFK and I have been bumped back to the WHY cabin beginning in row 51 :-|

Looks like they're now confident the a/c will stay as one with Y+ config.

Bad luck - points upgrade request now i guess?
