No Spirits (in J) Masquerading as COVID? [Back from Apr 2022]

I got it this week on a PER-SYD, travelling J.

I asked for a bloody Mary. The CSM said "Yeah, yeah ... Oh, just let me check." A couple of minutes later, "No, I'm sorry. They haven't loaded any spirits in these corona times, to minimise contact with passengers" before immediately proceeding to list off the other alcohol available. What a joke.

Oh and also no tomato juice. Must be a covid thing too.

Yesterday flying BNE-CNS in J I was specifically asked if I wanted a “wine, beer, tea, coffee or soft drink”

I got a mini Grant Burge (and was offered a second) which is just crazy because I’m sure they cost more than the usual basic spirits.

I agree. Flew ASP-SYD the other week and got three of the mini Grant Burge bottles.

What feedback did you get from QF when you contacted them out of interest?

So I have plans to book a March flight SYD <> MEL do we think spirits will be back in J by then?

Who knows, not many people seemed to have actually complained, just vented on here so perhaps they think there isn’t much demand for them at the moment...

I submitted feedback to QF following a NTL-BNE flight in J in early December, finally got a response today.

Your feedback is very important to us and I was sorry to hear of your disappointment with the beverage selection on board your QF 1778 flight.

We put a high priority on the quality of all the catering we serve on board and that includes the range of drinks available. Our Food and Beverage management put care and thought into choosing options that appeal to a broad a range of tastes. At the same time, we are constantly reviewing the menus and I know the team will want to know how you felt about the options on this flight.

We have forwarded your query to the inflight services department to find out why this happened.

I am very grateful that you took the time to provide us with your first hand experience and hope that we have an opportunity to welcome you aboard Qantas again soon.

So I wonder if I'll get a response from the inflight services department. Interesting that QF didn't admit to removing spirits from all flights even though we know that is the case.

I had a chance to chat to a CSM on a longer flight about this - and they didn't think spirits would be coming back anytime soon.

Part of the reasoning was that storage space at the front of the plane was at a premium previously, with all galley storage assigned to what they need to carry. (In fact at he beginning of the century we had seen flight storage start to creep out of the galley and into the overhead bins above the front rows, thankfully on newer B737s this has been pared back to one bin on the starboard side.)

Anyway, the conundrum now is they need to carry PPE, including masks and wipes for passengers, and with all usable storage space already assigned - something had to give, and at this stage that means spirits can't fit

That almost sounded plausible!!

737s fly to Bali where multi-course meals are prepared and plated individually, a second meal service is catered for, they carry amenity kits, PJs, full-sized bottles of champagne, pillows and blankets... it seems odd that when you take out all of those extras, there's not enough space for 12 masks and some wipes?

Come on Qantas... even Virgin Australia's lounges have spirits now!
