This building was built by William Cecil in the 1500s as an alms house.It basically is still used as such.It stands on the site of a hos[ital first erected in 1174 but destroyed by the Lancastrians in 1461. ..

After a good sleep a perfectly adequate brekkie was supplied.I had the Burghley breakfast. .
We then set out for Wales.It had rained a lot overnight but held off as we visited Burghley House.Of course it was Friday which meant the house was closed but you can drive in and have a look.The main gates. ..
But they wouldn't open them even for us so it was to what wa probably the servants entrance.The first glimpses of the house and their deer. ..

Many famous people apart from the Hon.Tony Hancock have visited Burghley house.Several kings and queens in fact.Charles 1 came through Stamford in 1646.Unfortunately Oliver Cromwell was here laying siege to Burghley house so he had to spend his last night of freedom in a house in town disguised as a servant.Then there have been Prime Ministers with Benjamin Disraeli spending many nights here.Victoria and Albert were guests here.

Now the forecast for our 2 full days here was for rain.We had come mainly to go to the Bodnant Garden-a National Trust property so free entry to Aussie NT members.We decided that the forecast for the first morning wasn't quite as bad as the next day and a half so went here first.There were a couple of heavy showers during our visit but most of the time they kept away.So here we go. ..
