Oneworld Classic Flight Reward Discussion - The Definitive Thread

re: "oneworld" award (140K/280K/420K) Planning - The Definitive Thread

Jacques, I found somewhere on QFF website that says a maximum of 5 Stopovers.
Since tried a few dummy bookings and it always stays at 140000 points (for Economy) until such time as you select flights for the 6th.
So 6 flights (not counting transfers) with 5 stopovers , the 6th flight being your home or other final destination providing it is no further East than home (if travelling East/West).

The basic rules have not changed much and are noted in post # 2 of this thread.

I'd like to say a big thanks to all that contributed to this thread, I have just booked 2 x J Oneworld Awards.

For those interested, we are going Melb-Syd-Tokyo, Tokyo-London-Cairo, Amman-Chicago, New York-LAX-Las Vegas, Las Vegas-LAX-Maui, Honolulu-Syd-Brisbane.
Used all 5 stop-overs, flying QF, JAL, BA, RJ, AA.

Currently looking at booking a RTW in Y using QFF points.
I was assessing my travel options by making dummy bookings through the QF website using the Award flights 140k point Cap limit on eligible flights. i have found to be a fairly clunky system of booking with no visualization on possible routes and options.
Recently i have discovered the oneworld explorer fare, can this be purchased with points? (140k?) if so how does this fare differ from the oneworld award, is there any benefits?

This may of been clarified in the thread however im yet to come across it.

You can also ring QFF and ask them to do a draft itinerary for you; you don't get charged unless you book and they can see more options than you can on-line. Worth the effort!

Newbie question:- I have an upcoming award Syd-Scl-Mex-Mia-Nyc-Bcn ... and so on ....... and let's say I miss the Mex-Mia flight, not intentionally ok, but because of a separate and late inbound flight into MEX from HAV [fwiw a 3 hour connection]. What would happen in that case?

I've been through this with QF recently: according to several different CSRs (on the premium desk too, so I assume they know their stuff), the formal rule is that if you miss a segment of a RTW points ticket then the remainder of the ticket is cancelled.

That being said, they can waive this rule with prior approval in exceptional circumstances (not sure if this would count as exceptional circumstances though). Additionally, I guess they may be a bit gracious about it if the missed segment is due to a late inbound flight, but be cautious: I'd suggest that if there's a chance of you missing a flight then you should speak to them about it before-hand.

This is an industry standard rule - if you miss any flight it counts as a no-show, and the rest of the itinerary is automatically cancelled by the system.

The best solution is call the issuing airline, and have them void the sector you are going to miss, and re-issue the ticket without that sector (e.g. as a ground transit).

FWIW, I always try to avoid having a naked transit with non-linked tickets.

Agreed, they can do more to help you BEFORE you miss the flight than after you have no-showed.

Just booked my first 280k J award and am pretty excited, as you can imagine it would be considering it is a rather late first time to the Americas. :) Having only booked 6 months out, I obviously didn't get the pick of the litter and had to make some compromises. For example, a trip on a 787 may have to wait (that and the reviews about the current JAL 787 J aren't too flash), but I will review as more 787's come online with other airlines.

Leg 1: BNE-AKL-SCL-BOG November 27 QF/LAN
42 hours of flying to Bogota! And then heading up to Cartagena on the Carribean coast, spend a week or two learning Spanish and then work my way back down the continent via Peru and Argentina to Santiago for 5 weeks. Lots of internal sectors to be purchased. And if I'm lucky, maybe a trip across to the Galapogas Islands.

Leg 2: SCL-MIA January 8 AA
A kind of forced stopover. Could not get acceptable availability on flights to JFK, YYZ or DFW, so will use this as an excuse to go for a drive, visit the Kennedy Space Centre and satisfy the inner geek. :)

Leg 3: MCO-DFW-YYZ January 11 AA (first sector in Y)
A week and a half in the north east corner, visiting Toronto, Niagara Falls, Boston and New York City and wherever else catches my eye in the meantime. It'll be freezing after relaxing on a Chilean beach only a few days before hand though!

Leg 4: JFK-LCY January 22 BA
On BA's flagship A318 service to London City airport. Currently have seat 1A on BA4. :) Looking forward very much to this flight. A week in Europe with no set plan, hope to visit a few friends spread around the continent that have emigrated or temporarily relocated there. Might even stop by Sweden and try my luck at the Northern Lights.

Leg 5: MXP-HKG January 29 CX
Cathay's new business 777's (hopefully). Hong Kong is another destination I've managed to avoid in the past, which I am hoping to rectify.

Leg 6: HKG-SYD-BNE Febuary 1 QF
Had to squeeze in a trip on the A380 of course. There was no availability on the flights connecting back to Brisbane in J for a few hours after arrival so was going to just accept a Y seat for the short hop. The phone operator told me "you can't fly economy on your last leg, it'd ruin the trip", and voila, a J seat magically appeared.

Very happy at the moment :)

Nice trip! I'd strongly recommend the Galapagos - had a week on a boat there in 1996 and it is still one of my fondest travel memories.

What if you're connecting onto the same carrier? I have a AONE5 coming up and my connection time at LHR T5 is 1:40 from one BA flight in F to another in CE. I assume BA would reaccommodate me on the later flight?

Obviously, I'm concerned about some big sports event in August and clearing the flight connections desk.
