Oneworld Classic Flight Reward Discussion - The Definitive Thread

re: "oneworld" award (140K/280K/420K) Planning - The Definitive Thread

I apologise. But I'm confused! I was sure I was told it needed to be QF plus a minimum of two others. Regardless, how does this reconcile with 14.5.1?
I think you are reading the rule incorrectly.:
...

14.5.1 A oneworld Award is a Classic Award Itinerary that includes travel on at least two oneworld Alliance Airlines other than Qantas and does not include any travel on any airline that is not a oneworld Alliance Airline.
See the blue bit - there's nothing that states travel in Qantas is necessary.

BA, QF is on a oneworld award.

CX, BA can be, as well as QF, CX & BA.

Okay. Thanks. I seem to have been under the wrong impression.

So hope the rules for this don't change. Planning on going around the world in 2014. (Sth America, Nth America, Europe, Africa, Asia) and want to go on points!!

re: "oneworld" award (140K/280K/420K) Planning - The Definitive Thread

Remember you're limited to only five stops (although you have up to 16 flight segments) so if you're wanting to visit all those continents, it will require some detailed planning.

re: "oneworld" award (140K/280K/420K) Planning - The Definitive Thread

Segments are essentially flights. Stops (usually indicated by 'o' I think) are stops at a particular port for more than 24 hours. A transit (indicated byban 'x') is a stop at a port for less than 24 hours.

So, for example, MEL-xBNE-oLAX is two flight segments but only one stop.

Continuing you might have LAX-xLAS-xDFW-xORD-oBOS, adding only your second (of five) stops but four to your earlier two segments, out of a total of 16 permissible.

re: "oneworld" award (140K/280K/420K) Planning - The Definitive Thread

... and with common usage, the o is generally omitted.

re: "oneworld" award (140K/280K/420K) Planning - The Definitive Thread

How do you have 16 segments but only 5 stops ?
My routing was:

BNE-LAX (via AKL but single flight number) (stop 1) ground transport to LAS
LAS-xDFW-MCO (stop 2) ground transport to YYZ
YYZ-xLHR-KBP (stop 3)
KBP-xLHR-NCL (stop 4) ground transport to TXL
TXL-xHAM-HEL (stop 5)
HEL-xFRA-xSIN-xSYD-BNE

So 16 sectors and 5 stopovers. That was in 2003, but the same rules applied. Surface segments count as a ticket sector.

or to write in full:

BNE-LAX//LAS-xDFW-MCO//YYZ-xLHR-KBP-xLHR-NCL//TXL-xHAM-HEL-xFRA-xSIN-xSYD-BNE

And it's surprising what you can fit into a <24 hour transit if you plan it right!

Hi everyone,

Just wanted to pass on my thanks to everyone who helped with constructing a RTW J Award for 280k points. I think I've picked the best available seats.

Details
MEL to SYD QF420 767-300/300ER- Seat 4A
SYD to SIN BA016 Boeing 747-400 - Seat 64k
BKK to SIN CX713 Boeing 777-300 - Seat 14A
SIN to FRA QF005 Boeing 747-400 - Seat 16A (exit row)
FRA to MAD IB3507 Airbus Industrie A320-100/200 - Seat 3F
MAD to EZE IB6845 Airbus Industrie A340-600 - Seat 1L
EZE to MIA AA934 Boeing 777-200/300 - Seat 9J
MIA to DFW AA395 Boeing 737-800 - Seat 27F (Y seat)
DFW to BNE QF008 Boeing 747-400 - Seat 5J (exit row)

Award cost $842 in fees.

Its a shame AA Dom business is listed as F instead of J but I know people use this for status runs!

First real J INTERNATIONAL travel having gotten SG & WP status with Y Dom travel over last 6 years. Anyway I've used the RTW Y award several times before which was great value but I think this will be awesome value.

Anyway if there are any last minute suggestions on better seats or how to fully experience J I'd appreciate it. I'll write a trip report on how I find J INT and various OW airlines and lounges.

Thanks AFF community.

Noice!

I flew IB's 346' Business Plus seats on 24/7 JFK-MAD and think they are just a bit better than QF's SkyBed Mk2 ;) And DFW-BNE, with 5B or 5J are the best solo seats on those planes! I am sure you will enjoy J travel very much ;)

Thanks Alanslegal near flown on IB before let alone in business. Hoping the J flights will add to the travel experience.

re: "oneworld" award (140K/280K/420K) Planning - The Definitive Thread

Spent a pleasant, but stressful hour on the phone with a lovely lady from Qantas to book our J Oneworld trip for May next year. (2 x 280,000 plus 2 x 6,000)

Not possible to book on the Web as TLL is not an option. No go with waving the fee though.

The final Itinerary was number 16, and even then we had to move things forward by one day.

SYD-HKG-LHR, LHR-VCE, BUP-HEL-TLL,IST-AMM-DXB,DXB-HKG-SYD.

We have flights on Qantas (2), Cathay (2), Finnair (2) Royal Jordanian (2), BA (1) and seats confirmed on all but BA and Royal Jordanian.

From Venice we are training it to Salzburg-Vienna and on to Budapest.
My better half wants a photo of herself on the meadow in the opening scene of The Sound of Music.

The lady from Qantas was very helpful, offering alternatives to what I asked for and improving a couple of flights. As a Bronze there weren’t really any flights that they could see that I couldn’t.

We did however improve our time in AMM, where we arrive at 22.30 and leave at 20.30 the next day, and for only a net loss of a few hours in DXB.

Now the flights are locked in I can concentrate on work for a while, at least until I start to wonder which is the best lounge to visit at each airport.

Without the help from the generous people on AFF I would not have been able to organise and book this trip. The wealth of knowledge never ceases to amaze me. Thanks to all.

re: "oneworld" award (140K/280K/420K) Planning - The Definitive Thread

Great work - looking to plan my trip for three of us next year - thankfully will be avoiding booking fees myself.

I think your lounge options are going to be pretty much single options at a lot of those locations ;)

re: "oneworld" award (140K/280K/420K) Planning - The Definitive Thread

No doubt, but will investigate the options in HKG and LHR, both arrival and departure.

re: "oneworld" award (140K/280K/420K) Planning - The Definitive Thread

HKG your only real option is the Wing - newly refurbished - F and J by then (currently just F). LHR T3 - BA/QF is better than the other options.

There really is a very much home field advantage to most ports.

Hi,

Sorry if this has been mentioned in this thread (unable to find it), but to achieve the 140K cap do you just try and book your award through the Qantas award website using the Qantas & Classic Partner Award option? The 140K limit doesn't seem to kick in. Should I be doing this another way?

Cheers
Simon.

You can do it online as you suggest or over the phone using classic awards. Over the phone there is a fee but the rep will probably find better options.

The online won't switch to this award until you have 2 non QF flights and the cost of the award is over 140k points ie you get the lesser value. Put in two longer distance non QF flights in the multi flight engine and it will switch very fast.

Good luck. I've booked 3 * Y OWE Awards (1 for a family member) and I'm about to go on a J OWE Award best value use of points IMHO.
