Oneworld Classic Flight Reward Discussion - The Definitive Thread

re: "oneworld" award (140K/280K/420K) Planning - The Definitive Thread

I'm looking at a J classic RTW award (or JASA??) ex PER for November. Rough routing (open to variation to fir flight availability) is PER-CDG-JFK, YVR-HKG-PER.
QF seem to be very cunning in that, for award flights, there appear to be no code share EK flights. All appear to be bookable only as an EK flight number, which effectively means that a OW award is not possible. Am I correct in this assumption?
Of course there may be CX J seats available but the new QF site makes it very difficult and time consuming to find this out. You essentially need to restart the booking process for each departure date you select.

Even if as a QF codeshare, I don't think EK metal would be available under a oneworld award

Just got a change email from Qantas... looks fine.

However when I look at the actual booking.

xx_ Sep 13 19:10 Malaga 20:30 Madrid Iberia flight operated by I2/IBERIA EXPRESS default IB3873
xx_ Sep 13 19:50 Madrid 22:20 Rome (Fiumicino) Iberia flight IB IB3238

I'm quick around airports, but not that quick!

Hi,

EK is not a OneWorld member so even as a codeshare it cannot be used in a OneWorld ticket.

For searching I really suggest getting a BA Avios account as their search facility is far superior or using AwardNexus.com as that is really easy to use.

If you want to just look up Cathay flights you can get an Asiamiles.com account for free and that will let you search Cathay flights.

Dale.

If you want to see the CX seats suggest you nominate HKG (or KUL for MAS or TYO for JAL or ...) as an intermediate stop on the way out (I assume this is where the problem lies) and book the two flights separately. This should help avoid too many Emirates flights.

Madrid to Malaga on Iberia Express is fine for the OW award? I was avoiding that because I thought Iberia Express was like Vueling and not permitted.

Not Iberia Express I was worried about (although I would have preferred Air Nostrum) ---- it's the -40 minute (ie negative) connection at MAD (both flights on same day)

After booking Oneworld with points, before going can points be used to upgrade say from Y to J on this fare on all or some sectors?.

No upgrades on OneWorld awards. They are treated like Classic Awards. No points or SC earn either.

re: "oneworld" award (140K/280K/420K) Planning - The Definitive Thread

Just be careful trying separate xx_-HKG HKG-xx_ with Cathay.

I spent hours on the phone with an agent trying to sort out a CMB-HKG-FCO which was showing availability for 2 pax when booked as CMB-HKG and HKG-FCO with a 12 hour stop, however when the agent went to book them together, the CX booking system wants to call it CMB-HKG-FCO with the stop removed.

Turns out they had 2 seats available CMB-HKG, 2 HKG-FCO however it was only allowing one for CMB-FCO via HKG.

Stuffed my plans right up.

Starting from CMB eh, I like :mrgreen:

my planning would be going so much better if I didn't have this error message for the last 24hrs. Not stupid yes I have clicked on flexible with the dates - yes they came up 24hrs ago but not now.....over QANTAS at the moment!!!!!!!!

There are no Award seats available for one or more of your requested flights. Select alternative dates and the .flexible with dates. option and try again. (#9207)

Try using a different browser.
I've come across this occasionally when using my default browser (Firefox) and after switching to IE I've had success.

Could also be that the flights you saw 24 hours ago have been snapped up.

re: "oneworld" award (140K/280K/420K) Planning - The Definitive Thread

Using the computer at work and at home different browers same message - seem I am only looking for economy - for nearlly 12mths away when on Monday the whole months were populated I don't think all the seats are gone. Just about to ring the call centre and make them run my dummy bookings for me for the next hour or so

re: "oneworld" award (140K/280K/420K) Planning - The Definitive Thread

As part of my planned J one world award next year, I have a couple of internal flights in the USA that book into economy, which is OK as short segments but if the rest of the trip is in business does this affect luggage allowance as the draft itinerary is showing Baggage 0 on the Washington Nashville route - and the Award type is One World and wondering if I still have an an allowance of 2 x 23 kilos per person ?

The segment Memphis via Chicago (then onto Hong Kong) shows 2 pieces of luggage allowed for Economy One World. Bit confused. When I spoke to the call centre last week they advised I would be covered as part of a One World Booking.

I think you'll find it's 2 x 23kgs (at a minimum). Worse case, AA provides baggage benefits for oneworld elites. See here.

re: "oneworld" award (140K/280K/420K) Planning - The Definitive Thread

any suggestions on a route for a J (280k) award to maximise travel on QF/BA/MH A380 aircraft? I just want to play around with the online booking engine and see if it's doable.

would this be ok:

SYD-HKG QF A380
HKG-KUL MH A380
KUL-LHR MH A380
LHR-LAX BA A380
LAX-SYD QF A380

Is that a valid routing for a RTW award?

re: "oneworld" award (140K/280K/420K) Planning - The Definitive Thread

It's valid, but you've still got 10k of miles to play with which is enough to get QF down to DXB & back from LHR. A few other options but that's probably the most simple.

Any specific reason you want to sample only A380s ?
I heard that CX's J product is amongst the worlds best albeit in a Boeing 777 - might be worth checking it out ?
