Oneworld Classic Flight Reward Discussion - The Definitive Thread

re: "oneworld" award (140K/280K/420K) Planning - The Definitive Thread

Hi Ed,

The 280k award is a OneWorld award and my understanding is that it can only be booked for travel on OneWorld airlines. Emirates is not a OneWorld airline.
This doesn't mean you can't book a multicity journey using Emirates - you can - but don't expect the points to be capped at 280k as per the OW award.

Cheers

Thanks I'll give that a go. If anyone else has any suggestions on routing home it would be appreciated. I've tried out of DFW, LAX, SCL, YVR & its no good.

Have you tried via Hong Kong or Japan?
On the 26th you can fly ORD-HKG on CX and then HKG-SYD directly on CX or via other Australian cities on QF.

It's a frustrating process, i've managed to get MEL - BOS via DXB then out of ORD - HKG - MEL all in business for 296,000. It's very difficult to obtain the RTW as QF is pushing the EK flights.

ASSISTANCE please. Thank-you all for your input in this thread, i've learned that i can multi city on points for RTW. Awesome.

However, i'm having a coughpy time trying to get home through the US in Business class. this is what i have so far.

DEP 7th October MEL - DXB via SIN Emirates - Business
DEP 9th October DXB - BOS direct Emirates - Business
Then stuck on getting home from the 22nd October - 28th October in Business class.

I have 290,000 points.

Please help.

Thanks,
Ed

It's not really frustrating, you just need to be flexible and think outside the square.

It seems you want to book MEL-BOS return in business. You have the required points to do this so should be possible.

Something like MEL-SYD-HKG-JFK/ORD/DFW/etc then onwards to BOS in Y. From BOS you have a few options, you could go via europe home (eg: BOS-LHR-MEL) or back the way you came. As long as you stick with one world carriers and don't exceed the 35,000 mile limit it won't cost you more than 280,000 points.

There is plenty of availability from NYC to MEL via HKG over the week in October you are trying to get back.

Thank-you for that. I now have it sorted.

MEL- DOH with QA in Business

DOH - MIA with QA in Business

BOS - DFW - NRT with AA combo First/Business

NRT - MEL with CX/QF - Business

280,000 points all up plus just over a 1k in taxes.

re: "oneworld" award (140K/280K/420K) Planning - The Definitive Thread

I suspect the BOS-DFW leg would be in economy?

Does the first class leg from BOS to DFW not turn the entire fare into a 420k redemption? A few I have tried this has always occurred.

I also think this is the case.
To travel in J or higher on AA as part of a OW award you must select a three class flight (F/J/Y) these are only available on the transcons LAX-JFK/MIA and I think one SFO trans-con also. If any other AA flights are selected as part of a J OW redemption travel will be in coach ie. economy on a two class AA service. It's worth sorting your itinerary to include a transcon with three classes for this reason.
YMMV

Seems i might've grabbed the odd duck as it states on the booking "you have been upgraded to first as business is not available on this segment"

Weird, i don't know i just booked the thing, i'll let you know after i've flown

When you load up the booking in MMB, what travel class does it say for the BOS-DFW sector?

re: "oneworld" award (140K/280K/420K) Planning - The Definitive Thread

Hi

I'm currently planning a J oneworld award departing Melbourne 14th Feb 2015 and returning 2nd March 2015. I'm looking at the following routing

1. MEL-LAX-MIA-MCO with QF/AA
2. MCO-LGW with BA
3. LHR-IST with BA
4. IST-DOH-MEL with QR

I have put dummy dates into the system just to see how availability looks across the months. However, I am finding it almost impossible to find a J seat for the MEL to LAX leg. I'm also planning on departing on Saturday so assuming that this might be even more difficult? So my question is does anyone have experience of Qantas releasing a J seat over the phone, particularly as a platinum flyer? Also, will i have to wait longer than 365 days to book my flights with not all of them being on qantas? Does anyone have any usefully strategies for booking with this being the case e.g. securing desired outbound leg alongside dummy dates for the other legs? If I did this, I'm assuming that qantas would deduct points for the service?

Thanks in advance for any advice

re: "oneworld" award (140K/280K/420K) Planning - The Definitive Thread

Have you looked at other options for the MEL-LAX? Maybe MEL-xSYD-LAX? I presume you want to get on the QF A380 which is understandable but if that's not essential you could also look at MEL-xSYD-xDFW, MEL-xKUL-LAX, MEL-xHKG-LAX, MEL-xBNE-xHKG-LAX, MEL-xPER-xHKG-LAX, MEL-xPER-xKUL-LAX, MEL-xSYD-xHKG-LAX, MEL-xSYD-xNRT-LAX. By the time you fly there will also be the option for MEL-xHKG-xDFW with AA on the long-haul in their new J. I would avoid MH if possible but CX's J product is awesome.

With respect to not being able to book all your flights in one go, given partner airline seats won't be available when QF's are released, I believe you will need to pay the change fee each time.

With my first destination being MCO, I don't mind how I get there if my first overseas port is in the US and I am able to travel the long leg in J. But even with the searches done so far there seems to be little to no availability in J. I have thought about going through Asia/middle east although the flying time is significantly longer than going through the states. But I will of course consider it if this ends up being my only option!

thanks for the advice

You are essentially looking for award seats that have not been released yet. QF award seats are released 353 days ahead and AA 330. So being that it's about 400 days till your first segment searching now won't do much good.

For the MEL-LAX on QF, you will want to be searching right when the window opens for 14FEB15 as these seats are snapped up very quickly.

Excuse my ignorance, not sure what MMB is? If its my bookings in QF it states class is First.
