Following on from the Interlining Revenue-award separate PNR possibility, if I was to book through an award Mel-Doha-Tel Aviv (QR and RJ) on one PNR then later wanted to tag ADL-Mel at the beginning, I should purchase the Adelaide - Melbourne sector and our baggage will be interlined to final destination?

(The reason I’m not booking all one PNR is that Qatar flights seem to be released earlier than Qantas and as it will be peak season if the award flights appear I want to grab them. )

Yes, your bags will be checked through to your final destination (although you still need to collect them to pass through customs).

On Tuesday I go QF AUS-HKG connecting to a reward seat separate PNR on BA to London that evening. Have around 5 hours on the ground so should be fine to collect bags and re-check for BA but was hoping to avoid the process of entering HKG etc. Any chance QF will check my bag through?

Simple answer is no, QF will not (not may not) tag your bags for both sectors at checkin in AU - even if you ask nicely, or ask to speak with supervisor, or jump up and down saying DYWIA, or heaven forbid threaten to never fly the airline again.

Next answer is that there are (airside) transfer desks in HKG who may give you the onward boarding pass and re-tag your bags. I believe BA transfer desk is E1 (near the Misocool) shop on the arrivals level. They have the ability to re-tag your bags by calling down to get someone to intercept and re-tag them.

My experience at the transfer desks is a few years old so might now be incorrect. In any case if they can’t, then you need to go through immigration, reclaim bags and checkin

Also depends what time the BA transfer desk opens at HKG. QF used to only open their transit desks 3 hours before departure, so you had to sit and wait until then. Or exit, and (a) collect your bags and wait upstairs for chicken to open, or (b) take the airport express to Kowloon and check in there (only really worth it for 5+ hours). If BA's transfer desk is open, no worries.

Oh this is very helpful! I didn't know that. Only problem is if I arrive on time i'll be about 6 hours before the onward journey in which case I probably won't be able to check in either. Oh well!

Assuming your Qantas flight is a paid booking, they should check you through to your BA reward booking.

I have done exactly that previously but QF will not check through luggage on separate PNR, even with that exemption for award/revenue combination and even showing a printed copy of that webpage.

How recently? I had QF check my partner and I through from an F award to a paid CX J booking just 3 months ago.

I think you may have got unlucky on the day with the check-in agent..
