Opt out of CSM greeting??

i suggest airlines offer/create a new 'status/tier' in their F/F schemes...'NARCISSISTIC'...there could be Narcissistic Platinum..Narcissistic Gold..etc etc!! so this would automatically appear on the Passenger Info List (PIL) that cabin crew receive, to save them/you the embarrassment to those that are happy to remain 'anonymous'...notice i suggest this for the NARCISSISTS...as 'NON narcissists' dont need the recognition...lol ;)

I know you're being facetious, but I actually like the CSM greeting.

I'm quite introverted unless I've spent a lot of time with someone, and have never even pressed a call button in my life. The CSM greeting gives me a chance to make it known if I need or want anything without me feeling like I'm interrupting someone.

It's embarrassing to receive the welcome in Y because it essentially means that the hostess thinks that you have either fallen upon hard times or are a complete tightarse.

... the CSM put his hand out and I had to shake it. Then my wife gets out the bottle of hand sanitiser...

Are you serious?? Does your wife realise that the fork she used to consume the salmon has already been in 6000 human mouths already? <redacted>

You're trolling, right?

Since you've taken the time and effort to complain about CSM's greeting you by your name on flights, i'm going to guess that you're not the most pleasant person to the CSM when he does take the effort to personally welcome you on board.

The only legitimate reasons I can think of for not wanting to be greeted by name are these:

1. You're a former well known criminal and don't want to be identified by other passengers.
2. You're a super secret spy and the whole business cabin is full of baddies and you don't want them to know who you are
3. You have a really embarrassing name.

You're kidding right? I know plenty of companies that have a Y policy for all travel. Doesn't mean you personally are a tight cough does it??

Steal a do not disturb sign from a hotel and slip it into your shirt pocket or hang it on your ear and you should be fine.

I think it was a joke :)

much in the same line as a FA who saw her good friend (and ours) who was married to a millionaire flying economy one time between Perth and Melbourne... she welcomed her with 'so I see the divorce is underway then?' (this was way back in the days when the cheapest economy fares were in the $600 return region...)

You get personal greetings on domestic flights? Must be more important than us ordinary Platinums.

I have received one personal greeting in the last 12 months and that was as a P1

Never had a greeting on a Dom flight. Int'l (except NZ) is J so always get a greeting.

Got my greeting on a Trans Tasman flight as a P1.....nice touch but the important thing was getting a drink early in the flight.....hic :)

I have not had a greeting in domestic Y for a year or so. International Y is also very patchy (say 1 in 3 flights).

One in three? You lucky chap!!! :p

mmm now let me think? Never been a spy, and Tony Hancock is not particularly embarrassing.....................

Emirates have a series of stickers that you're meant to stick on your headrest, includes "wake me for breakfast", "wake me for duty free" and "do not disturb". Just get the latter and stick if on your forehead :)

Coming back from BNE to MEL the other day, I was boarding between two WP's The one in front got the Welcome Back Mr X, I got the Row 14 on the right, and the guy behind got the Welcome back Mr Y.
it was like a well scripted, you get this, you get that routine, personally I much prefer a "hows your day going?" or "how are you today" much more personal and less robotic IMHO.

My next flight I'm going to turn it around, I'm going to say to the CSM on boarding, "Welcome back" that will stump him/her :)

Probably not, quite a lot of people travel with hand sanitiser - anyone who had had small children will have it in the most heavily used rooms at home as well as having small tubes in cars, handbags, travel or toiletry bags. My wife and I stand accused and convicted.

You need to walk in the shoes of others before passing judgement. There can be innumerable reasons why the OP is as they are - and the reasons aren't important to this discussion.

I know a number of people on AFF who will resonate with the OP. Some of them I consider close friends.

A colleague of mine does this on Virgin who are very regular in saying "welcome back" to all velocity members. It really throws them, and once he even had an FA run down the aisle with a free drink saying "I'm so sorry I didn't recognize you sir!" - even though he'd actually never seen him before!

I used to fly the 747 PER-SYD every week and the CSM always gave a personal greeting on that flight. Unfortunately I hardly ever got a greeting (always in front row Y with a shadow), as I apparently look like a guy, however my name is clearly female.

They would welcome the people around me then stand next to my seat staring at the passenger manifest wondering what the hell to do, before deciding that ignoring me was the safest option. A bit annoying as I usually like to ask for a blanket on that flight. At some point they would realise I was a woman and keep me well supplied in red wine for the rest of the flight, so it all worked out....

that's why the poor F/As have that constant confused look on their faces..when should they/when shouldnt they.... :?: walk a mile in their shoes! if you were rejected/ignored constantly day in/day out by those around you....wouldnt you just 'give up'! :?: oh and btw dont reply with 'it's their job' !!! they are still human beings that have feelings like you do!!!!

Just like you'd need to walk a mile in the shoes of an FA, who when they decide to greet a passenger by name, probably think that they're doing something that the great majority of their flyers would appreciate, and are going the extra mile to add a personal touch to someones flying experience. Whether or not they do it frequently, or to P1's or WP's shouldn't matter, they're not required to introduce themselves, and I think that flyers should consider themselves lucky to be on a flight who has a CSM who is actually demonstrating that they're doing little extra things to make their passengers feel more welcome.

They shouldn't have to consider whether or not that particular pax wants to be greeted or not, because it's something that i'm fairly confident that most people would enjoy. If you had the option to opt-out of a CSM greeting, I think that'd only discourage the practice of greetings all together. Why do we want to go and put limitations and restrictions on a display of 'extra' service that CSM's aren't required to do anyway?

I'm not saying that the OP's reasons aren't legitimate, or anyone who doesn't like the greeting doesn't have a good reason not to, but I just think it is the absolute pinnacle of petty complaints to jump on a forum and complain about receiving 'extra' service.

as long as we don't go down the track of BA where they monitor your travel and if you happen to be in Club or First for the first time they actually announce that in front of everyone... 'Mr xx_ this is your first ever flight in Club with us...'

To me that would be embarrassing...
