Opt out of CSM greeting??

I had my first WP greeting on a flight from Bne today. Got a "welcome back" when the FA scanned my boarding pass, another "welcome back" from CSM on boarding and then during the flight a visit from the CSM asking if I needed anything or would like a paper. Also got a goodbye Ms Mollycram as I left the flight. And sorry, but I quite liked it...

another "welcome back" from CSM on boarding

I got this on a recent domestic leg and said with special emphasis. Considering it was my first QF flight in 8 months, I thought it was very apt (couldn't wait to see what had changed, especially how the safety videos were introduced now :p).

Is it just me, or does the notion of a crew member wanting to shake the hand of a passenger strike other AFFers as being a bit odd? IME, waiters/hotel receptionists/CSOs of varied hues don't do it, so why cabin crew? Directions from above, maybe? And if so, why?

I've had it happen before and yes agree it's odd. Generally I try to fill my hands with bubbly and nuts before the CSM approaches so there is a way out if the hand gets extended.

Hadn't thought about it being odd - but nothing wrong with it in my opinion.

If my drink was $16000 or 384,000 FF points I'd expect more than just a handshake :D

In a public place, really? That’s a bit bold, but I guess P1’s can get away with that :p

She no longer works for QF, but I hear she was flying in QLD recently ;)

I flew in Y, MEL-SIN and SIN-MEL recently.

I had the CSM greeting MEL-SIN. "Is there anything I can do for you, Mr Austman?". I replied that I was fine (and I really was in 80A). The CSM then said "Would you like better headphones?". I had my own, not yet out of their case, so said "Not necessary, but thank you".

I thought afterwards, what else could she do anyway? Are better headphones the limit?

On SIN-MEL, I again had the greeting, and was addressed by name. And was given an Express Arrivals Card. The new SIN lounge re-arrangements had left me pretty unimpressed with the SIN ground service and I mentioned this. Then I cheekily asked "What is it that you can actually do for me?". And there was not really much of a response... Then I thought, how about a newspaper from today? (and not 2 days old, as on offer in the lounge). So I pressed the call button, got the CSM's response (she was just 2 rows back) and I did get a current newspaper!

The problem was, this "CSM" later served meals in the back section of the A380. She was very pleasant and I even got a very nice greeting when the breakfast was served.

But her voice seemed to change to a distinctively masculine register when later cabin announcements were made...

... so I suspect it's not always the CSM that gives this greeting!

I was happy enough with the on-board experiences flying Y.

i flew on an a380 and the flight had two "CSMs".....they mustve had excess staff on roster...

I recently did A380 to LHR return. What I noticed was in Y it was a CSS, cabin service supervisor, doing the greetings and offerings as per their name badge. In J it was a CSM.

The cabin supervisor did the greetings etc when I flew Y to PVG. The CSM looked particularly disinterested when handing out the landing forms. I have to say I felt really well looked after on outbound and return journey's. Drinks from the J cabin, the offer of a newspaper, my jacket was hung up, and pyjamas on the return trip. I'm beginning happier with QF at the moment.

I agree with you OP, it would be awesome to have that kind of opt-out. I've had it a few times on J. No handshake though. To be brutally honest, I'd rather just hide in a suite and get a polite knock on the door at drinks/meals times.

I'm not that introverted, but when it comes to flying I really want to be as isolated as possible....now if only I had the money to fly in the pointy end!

Yep - this is how it works I've noticed.

When in whY I get greeted by the CSS.

When in J/F I get greeted by the CSM.

Either way - I appreciate it - even if, like Austman I'm simply saying that I'm fine thank you :)

Flying to HKG in Y and the Y supervisor came up to me before take off introducing herself saying she was visiting all the WP's. She offered to move me to the exit row as it was free and as a WP had first option on it. She said if I wanted to stay where I was (front of Y) then they'd keep the J drinks coming (which they did as I stayed there).

On the return in J I was warmly welcomed back, pleasure to have me on board and anything they could do was no problem.

Really enjoyed the intro etc. almost felt valued!

I believe they have 2 x CSM's, a "Customer Service Manager" and a "Cabin Services Manager". I got a welcome aboard from a lady that I am sure her badge had the latter, and the welcomes were done by a male.

Paging QF FA's, QF FA's to the white courtesy phone... :)

Oh and re the handshake, I noticed the CSM shake the hand of the Pax in front of me on a recent flight. Knowing what was coming, I immediately put my water bottle into my right hand and had my headphones in the other when they approached. Saved any awkwardness :)

On a recent flight from BKK-SYD the CSM spoke to me towards the end of the flight. She mentioned that she came around earlier to say hello and I was asleep so she left an express card, an inbound immigration card and some water.

Interesting experience flying to TSV the other day. Got into BNE-TSV late Saturday night and returned TSV-BNE on Sunday afternoon. The crew had just started their shift on Sunday and I saw them as they arrived at the airport. As I was boarding one of the crew remarked that it was a short trip for me. Yes it was! ;)

I had the CSM greeting for the first time on QF this week (NRT-SYD).

It was discreet and low key, and the CSM seemed quite genuine.

I'm totally fine with this if it were to happen on a regular basis, but I know it won't.

LOL ;)

I had the CSM came up and greet me on a SYD-SIN recently. It was after we departed and when the seat belt lights were turned off. I was in seat 80K so he came around my empty space in front of me, and we had a quick chat. I had my luggage bag used as a foot stool and we talked how 80A/K are one of the best seats in the Y cabin. Oh and yeah, we shook hands too LOL

I find this quite interesting - did the CSM come round and say "is there anything I can get you" and you replied "yes please, PJs, J drinks, etc" or did the CSM offer those things in the first place (i.e "Hello Mr TonyHancock would you like the PJs", etc)?

I've had the question asked a few times ("would I like anything") and have always replied "no thanks" due to fear of being knocked back and looking foolish.

The CSM's only words were "Landing Card" on the outbound journey. He came across as quite disinterested. The Cabin Supervisor and FA's on the outbound journey offered to hang up my jacket, and offered drinks from J. I didn't request anything.

On the return journey the Cabin supervisor asked if there was anything he could get me and I politely asked for a G&T. He fetched this himself. The pyjamas were offered to me by one of the FA's and drinks were delivered from J again.

It seems a bit hit and miss and totally dependent on the individual crew members.
